This resolution directs the City of Corvallis not to invest in companies that benefit from genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and other war crimes. While the resolution does not mention Israel, it clearly targets Israel, the country most frequently and prominently accused of these things. We are concerned about the safety of the Jewish community in Corvallis, given responses to similar resolutions in other communities. In addition, we believe that city councilors and staff are not qualified to determine what meets the definition of the terms genocide, ethnic cleansing, etc., and that attempting to determine such will divert the council's time and energy from local concerns.

Despite what are likely good intentions, please consider this resolution as an attempt to ward off feelings of unbearable helplessness toward violence in the world, more than it is actually doing something that helps, while also imparting unintended, divisively harmful consequences. Thank you.
This petition is a piece of political theater-- if passed, it will have no influence on the foreign conflicts it purportedly concerns. And yet, its consideration alone has had the effect of creating tension and fear among people in Corvallis. The Council should consider what it is actually achieving for their constituents.
This kind of political grandstanding is an entirely symbolic effort that will have no impact positive or negative on conflict zones around the world. The City Council should defeat this resolution (and, indeed, it should not even consider these kinds of resolutions, as they lie outside the scope and expertise of the Council).
This resolution appears to be beyond the scope of a small city's decision making, and it is upsetting local citizens. Those who support a Palestinian state and are furious with Israel need to find a different venue to express their concerns. Corvallis leaders need to stick to local, state, or regional issues. I did not elect you to speak for me on divestment, so please, don't.
Keep Corvallis a welcoming community for all. Stop wasting public time and money on a resolution that will have no effect on conflicts on the other side of the world but will negatively affect our local community and your own constituents. No amount of rewording will change that this is a lose-lose resolution for Corvallis. (Ward 8)
I've seen this type of policy do more harm than good.
