Newport Mesa Unified School District formed a district committee to recommend the best plan to re-district. The committee approved Plan B. The Administration and the Board of Education ignored their committee`s choice and added another plan, Plan G. The committee was not consulted nor told about Plan G, Map B was decided upon by a committee of community members who represented each trustee zone and it should stand as the designated map for 2018

The administration continues to ignore the recommendation made by the district committee regarding Plan B. I am currently preparing a formal letter to the Board of Education to demand transparency regarding the introduction of Plan G.

I am in favor of Map B because it is the only map that meets the legal criteria of the Voting Rights Act and the lawsuit requirements and it is the only map that was thoroughly vetted and selected by a committee of community members. Plan/Map B prioritizes the voting rights of the Westside Costa Mesa community and gives them equitable representation on the school board, something long ignored. I believe equitable leadership for the Westside will build leadership in the community and ultimately have a positive impact on literacy scores and the educational future of our Westside students and families who ARE the protected class in this lawsuit.
I'm signing because the District officials need to follow through with the recommendation by a special committee which studied configurations and boundaries and recommended Map B. By altering boundaries, in another Map G, the CdM zone benefits at the expense of the Westside parents, students and taxpayers. The District officials need to engage the community in the proposed maps and make Map G easily available to the public. The 2018 election will be an important one and voters in all districts must be given opportunities to comment.

The main issue at hand is the lack of proper representation and inequity for the 2018 school board election. Map B was decided by a committee of community members that represented each trustee zone and it should stand as the designated map for 2018. The map will be redrawn after the 2020 census because population numbers will have increased since 2010. School Board Trustee Maps are the subject of multiple public hearings in the months ahead. Please speak up and let your voice be heard.
