Final supporters
We listened with intent and excitement as it was announced that Pine Hollow Middle School would be built:
Wake County leaders broke ground today for Pine Hollow Middle, due to open in July 2016. Board of Education members and County Commissioners leaders marked the start of construction for the 59-classroom school that will serve more than 980 students. School board chair Christine Kushner says Pine Hollow will be a warmly welcomed school.
“We have two year-round elementary schools – Sycamore Creek and Pleasant Union – that are nearby,” Kushner said. “We have a number of parents anxiously awaiting a middle school that is proximate and will have that same calendar.”
We have endured the traffic nightmares and safety issues caused by the moving of fill dirt from the building site of Pine Hollow that we were lead to believe was being built for kids on this side of town and this community.

We voted to pass the school bond (tax increase) to help build these facilities in order to keep these kids in school in our own community. By continuing on the proposed path WCPSS is undermining support from this community for any future support for a school bond referendum.
As it stands now we were sold a bill of goods leading us to believe that Pine Hollow was being constructed to keep our Middle School Kids in a school closer to our homes, thus promoting more parental involvement, a more vested interest in their well being and a school that kids do not have to endure a 1+ hour bus ride one way. These reasons, as well as others, place unnecessary hardships on the children, the parents and the entire families affected by these decisions of WCPSS.
We are petitioning the WCPSS to reconsider their decision to allow those children currently attending Sycamore Creek ES and Pleasant Union ES as the year round calendar option to feed into Pine Hollow MS.

I am currently compiling your accounts of these disruptions to present to the officials responsible for project oversight. Your willingness to document these experiences is shifting this from a local frustration into a formal record of necessary accountability.

The steady growth of this petition shows that our neighbors are no longer willing to overlook the safety concerns caused by the construction process. It is heartening to see this community come together to insist on accountability for how these projects impact our daily lives.

I am "old school" & I still believe that all students are better off attending the schools that are closest to home. Obviously, sending them further away creates a hardship on the entire family unit, not just the student, for a variety of reasons. Let's keep everyone happy & give the parents & students what they were promised by WCPSS.
I have heard that the designated middle school for our children is Durant Road as it stands now. While I am sure that is a fine school it is located approximately 11+ miles away from us....versus approximately 2. Please allow our Hawthorne year round children to attend Pine Hollow MS. It is the right thing to do.
Would very much like to have Pine Hollow as the base school for Chestnut Oaks. We were led to believe that Sycamore Creek ES would feed the new middle school and supported the school bond that built the school. Failing to do so will certainly undermine support for future bond packages.
I have 2 kids attending Pleasant Union Elementary. Currently we do not have a year-round option for middle school and Wakefield is much farther from our neighborhood then Pine Hollow would be. I hope you'll consider using PUE as a feeder school to Pine Hollow Middle.
Please make Pine Hollow the base school for the Chestnut Oaks subdivision. I currently have a student at Durant that has over a 2 hour commute each day, can't participate in afterschool or extracurricular activities becasue of the undue hardship of commuting to and from school, and has no classmates in our general living area.
This would add another 35-40 minute commute for before school. This is crazy Leesville is on the way.
As a Pleasant Union ES parent, I have grave concerns on how Durant Elementary will provide a valuable education to my children. The school has average standard test scores in the low 60s with a 17 to 1 student/ teacher ratio. Pleasant Union just acquired an increase in the student population as part of last year's realignment and acquisition of students from Lead Mine, Lynn Road, North Ridge and Wakefield. How is the county planning on improving these test scores if they are currently operating with a low student to teacher ratio and are increasing the student inflow into Durant with the current year re-alignment? Are there plans to hire new teachers and increase the number of classrooms within Durant? I imagine the answer to this is "No" which is a bit frustrating. We purchased our home with our children's education being our #1 priority. The PUE alignment to Pine Hollow would require the year round middle school to acquire an additional 100 to 125 students. Additionally, the school is 5.5 miles away from Pleasant Union and allows buses to utilize the roads from east to west which would decrease bus traffic on the highways. This preliminary decision does not appear to reflect any interest on our children’s interest and education. It is my understanding that the Brier Creek area will be re-aligned to the new Pine Hollow middle school. Brier Creek is currently within the Leesville Road Middle School district. This school also has a 17 to 1 student teacher ratio and received an average standard score of 81.46% within 2015. These scores are almost 20% higher than Durant Road. Why not allow our school (Pleasant Union) to be aligned with the new middle allowing Durant Road the resources required to improve their average scores which is a win/ win for the county and the parents? If this is not an option, please consider aligning Pleasant Union students to Leesville Middle.

My daughter has a middle school bus ride of 1.5 hr is the morning and 1 hr at night. Due to her having to get on the bus at 6:40am I am driving her to school in the morning and it takes 1 hr. This is a hardship for working parents! Pine Hollow drive for me would be 15 min. Please revise district.
