What a terrible situation!

I have heard about the violations and other uncivil and sometimes threatening behavior by persons associated with Uproot Meats for years. Their actions are outrageous and must be curbed by local officials.

I really don't understand how they keep getting away with this, and why the County is doing nothing about it.

Like characters in a bad horror movie, these folks keep rising from the seeming (and seamy) dead. I thought the County had shut their activities down

No excuse for ignoring regulations.

Unconscionable

There must be regulations prohibiting what is being done at this pig farm. Who is looking out for those of down stream from them. This is a public health issue at the very least.

Current neighbor of uproot meats.

This is not how you farm. I am 88 years old and grew up on a family farm, we took care of our land and our water and especially our animals it was also important to build good relationships with neighboring farms as this was a honest way of life. There seems to be no integrity with how Uproot Meats are conducting themselves with their type of farming or being a good neighbor.

Please make sure that this action stops it’s hurting the entire neighborhood thank you

Why are they allowed to continue after multiple violations starting shortly after moving onto this property?

As a former resident of Ashland, who retains great affection for the both the real place of Ashland and its ideals, I am startled to learn from a longtime friend about what appears to be a glaring exception and affront to those ideals. I understand that an outfit called “Uproot Meats” has been allowed to trespass upon the watershed, just upslope from the lateral canal that most residents presume to be carefully protected. A quick satellite view of the site shows the description of a denuded hillside in the worst location relative to the canal is no exaggeration. While I am no expert in environmental law, I cannot imagine that Ashland does not have a nuisance tort claim against this company, even though it may be small enough to avoid categorization as a “point source” animal feeding operation. It also appears that Krista Vetger, the owner, has been active in adorning her brand with the trendy language of sustainability and animal ethics, nearby residents report the situation on the ground to be a dystopian squalor of animal waste, soil erosion, harassment of neighbors, and unpermitted eyesore buildings. The Jackson County Commission has been contorting itself to avoid issuing orders to abate the nuisance entirely, resigning itself instead to unattended hearings and unremediated violations. This is not an iteration of the set-piece story about suburban, NIMBY-ist Americans not understanding the realities of agriculture, such as animal odors and farm equipment on roads. This appears to be a rogue, unprofessional operation whose owner, perhaps with positive intentions, jumped into a ‘back to the land’ project without properly researching the location or actual responsibilities of raising animals, and is now attempting to bully her way into the acquiesce of Ashland and Jackson County, rather than cut her losses and learn her lesson. I urge you to conclusively assert the community’s right to an unmolested watershed, as well as to not host an operation whose environ

I currently live in Santa Barbara, but own a house in the Oak Knoll neighborhood (Ashland), pay property tax, etc.

It's time local government did something about this travesty of sustainable farming practices.
