Petition to WEHC to Discontinue Public Address System
To the Directors and Board of West End House Camp,
We, the undersigned property owners of Long Pond, wish to express our gratitude for the longstanding and positive relationship that the camp has maintained with the lake community. Your ongoing commitment to good citizenship, community involvement, and generous contributions to the well-being of the lake is deeply appreciated and valued.
We recognize that West End House Camp offers a unique and enriching experience for young campers, and we commend the camp's dedication to fostering personal growth and outdoor exploration. However, we would like to address a concern regarding the use of the camp’s public address (PA) system, which can often be heard throughout the lake area. The sound from the loudspeakers disrupts the peace and quiet that we, as residents, seek and cherish in this natural environment.
Long Pond is a place of serenity, an environment that promotes relaxation, regeneration, and harmony with nature. For many residents, this peaceful atmosphere is one of the primary reasons we chose to call Long Pond our home. The sound of the PA system carries across the lake, interrupting this quietude and detracting from the natural soundscape that many of us deeply value.
With respect and understanding, we kindly request that the camp consider alternative communication methods that could allow for effective coordination without impacting the tranquil setting of Long Pond. Some suggestions for quieter communication methods include:
- Handheld Radios for Staff: Staff could use two-way radios to coordinate with one another, ensuring efficient communication without external noise.
- Mobile Messaging Apps: Utilizing a group messaging app could allow camp leaders to send updates to staff and counselors in real-time, without the need for audible announcements.
- Walkie-Talkie Systems for Counselors and Staff: Direct communication among counselors and staff would eliminate the need for a PA system and reduce disturbance.
Our goal with this petition is not to diminish the effectiveness or the traditions of West End House Camp, but rather to encourage thoughtful adjustments that will help preserve the serenity and restorative spirit of Long Pond. We believe that these measures can strengthen our shared community values while still supporting the camp’s operational needs.
Thank you for considering our request. We are confident that West End House Camp will continue to be a cherished part of the Long Pond community, and we look forward to supporting your work in harmony with the environment we all hold dear.
