We, the friends and supporters of DeJuan Joyner, respectfully urge the court and legal community to uphold the original sentence issued by Judge Nicholas Kamau: 1½ to 3 years with 5 years probation.

The Issue
Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Anthony Voci is seeking to resentence DeJuan Joyner to a longer prison term, expressing dissatisfaction with Judge Kamau’s ruling. ADA Voci had originally requested 5–10 years in state prison for a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcyclist, who was a friend of the ADA and a fellow motorcyclist.

Concerns of Bias and Injustice
There are documented articles about ADA Voci’s involvement in a case where a Black female driver was accused of running a motorcyclist off the road. Charges against her were later dropped. The lack of backlash faced by ADA Voci in that incident raises concerns about selective prosecution and racial bias in the current case against Mr. Joyner.

It appears that ADA Voci is leveraging his power and influence to create harsher consequences for DeJuan without due cause. His actions may stem from personal bias rather than justice, and we fear that this is an abuse of authority.

DeJuan’s Character and Circumstances
DeJuan Joyner is a young Black man, a devoted father, and a god-fearing individual who has served in the military. He is known for caring for his family, attending church regularly, and had been accepted into the Philadelphia Fire Department as a cadet. At the time of the incident, he made a poor judgment call by leaving the scene of the accident, a mistake for which he has taken full responsibility. He was scared and reacted poorly, as many young individuals might in a moment of panic.

He has tearfully expressed his remorse in court and has also written a sincere letter apologizing to the victim.

A Questionable Retrial Attempt
ADA Voci is now alleging that DeJuan was driving 90 mph and street racing, though the accident did not result in the loss of life or permanent disability. Instead of pursuing justice fairly, ADA Voci has sought a new judge—one he believes will impose a harsher sentence. This effort appears to be more about revenge than rehabilitation or justice.

Our Request
This resentencing seems to be based on personal bias, not legal merit. We ask for public support to stop what appears to be prosecutorial overreach. DeJuan has already accepted responsibility and has begun the process of rehabilitation. Please help us stand against injustice by signing this petition to keep the original sentence and prevent further unnecessary punishment.

Thank you,
Family, Friends, and Supporters of DeJuan Joyner
