MAT asphalt was brought into our community without our consent or our involvement in the Chicago City Council Department of Planning and Development process. A deal was made between the city and the owners of MAT asphalt. Alderman George Cardenas made it happen with the rezoning of those buildings on Pershing Rd. The IEPA side stepped Environmental Justice area protocols. We got a bad deal. No to the IEPA 5 year operating permit to MAT asphalt.

One of the most crucial factors to reflect on when setting up any kind of plantation is considering the consequences that it will have on citizens and the environment. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with Mat Asphalt setting up more plantations as long as they are restricted based on the environment conditions around the area, the people (especially children) who live near it, and the job opportunities it offers in areas with high unemployment rates. However, here in southern part of Chicago, Mat Asphalt has become too influential in our daily lives by damaging our ecosystem, polluting the air of our communities, and setting up their plantations in too many regions, destroying our green neighborhoods and sickening our people. Now is the time to reconsider. The time has come to stop the spread of these plantations for a greener Chicago. I sign this petition with the desire that we will reduce the pollution in the southern part of Chicago and live our lives with a clean environment.
