It has been my good fortune to work with scientists at Volcani and Hebew University of Jerusalem so I recognize from personal experience that unique and important resource represented by Volcani.

Even in an era when electronic communication is everywhere, conducting science is still about spontaneous personal interaction. The Volcani Center has been in the middle of some of the greatest scientific achievements in agriculture, largely because of the synergy it has with adjacent institutions. Relocation of the Center threatens to lessen its effectiveness and impact at precisely the time when those things are needed most. I urge you NOT to move the Volcani Center.

Having been to the Volcani Center numerous times and as a participant in BARD projects, I appreciate the quality of research and impact that work at the Volcani Center has had, not only in Israel but around the world. Its proposed relocation will certainly diminish its work during a transition period and likely create longer-term negative effects,

A strong research program in Agriculture is essential for a safe, abundant and affordable food supply which underwrites economic and political stability of a country. The Volcani Center now thrives and interacts with the Hebrew University of Rehovot and the Weizmann Institute for synergies in advancing new knowledge of benefit to both agriculture and the biomedical sciences. Agriculture is a life science just like medicine and veterinary medicine and molecular biology. It would be a major mistake to move the Volcani Center away from mainstream research centers in the Rehovot area to an isolated area of Israel. It takes years to build excellence that characterizes the Volcani Center, but a single decision can take that away in a heart beat. I strongly recommend embracing the Volcani Center for its contributions and making efforts to strengthen it rather than moving it and disrupting its critical activities to animal and plant sciences in Israel. Proximity to science is much more important than proximity to farmers as the outcomes of science will be readily adopted by farmers who wish to enhance efficiencies in production.

The Volcani has been exceptional globally due to synergies: they bring teams of Israeli scientists, famers, and international scholars together around complex problems in search of practicable solutions to critical agricultural challenges. It is a hub, and it is notable that wheels spin about central axels. The Volcani Center is the most cost-effective (in terms of results per investment) agricultural research organization due to the ease of collaboration. Moving the Volcani Center away from the intellectual and centrally-located hub it currently occupies is an effective way to reduce not only its own intellectual capital and the cutting-edge and policy-relevant science it creates but also threaten the synergies that exist with the surrounding world-class institutions.

The Volcani Center is known globally as a key part of 3 institutions (with Hebrew University and the Weizmann Institute) that drive the highest level of research in agriculture and the life sciences. It is really unthinkable to separate the Volcani Center from this science center. It would not only weaken the Volcani Center but would weaken science in Israel.

I have had a privilege to be exposed to the excellent research that is happening in Volcani Center many years ago, and it impacted my future. Success of Israeli Agriculture is inseparable form the research advancement made at the Volcani Center. Relocation of this vital research institution will have devastating impact on the future of the Israeli agriculture and advancement of the important agricultural research. Please do not relocate Volcani Center!

The Volcani Center is a world-class research institute. Moving to a new location remote from the rest of the scientific community would threaten their ability to maintain excellence and high productivity in agricultural science. I strongly oppose moving the Volcani Institute away from its present location. Proximity to all parts of Israel and proximity to colleagues at educational institutions is paramount to the continued success of the institute

I have known the work of the Volcani Center for many years. I have visited the Center and it is an important agricultural research center not only for Israel but also for the world. It would be a tragedy to move this center and disrupt its functions and thereby weaken its impact.

Many of the seminal findings in plant biology and their applications to agriculture originated at the Volcani Center. As a university administrator I have learned to listen to the best researchers and do everything possible to remove barriers to their progress. This plan is disruptive and upsets syngeristic relationships with other institutions and researchers. The Volcani Center has been a contributor to our current understanding of plant biology. It is advised that the wishes of the faculty be followed and that any changes are only done with their endorsement.
