PETITION TO RENEW ECOMB'S BUILDING LEASE AT 210 SECOND STREET, MIAMI BEACH
ECOMB, the Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches, is a Miami Beach-based environmental education nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable living practices, fostering environmental stewardship and preserving our community’s ecology.
During the past 20 years, ECOMB has played an important role in catalyzing the sustainability movement Miami Beach as well as in implementing a variety of environmental projects of economic and environmental importance thus transforming Miami Beach, little by little, into a more sustainable society.
Presently, our Environmental Center and office is located on a small building, which we lease from the City of Miami Beach for a symbolic annual amount. However, a few days ago, we were informed that, tomorrow, during the Monthly Commissioners Meeting, the Administration will seek direction from the City Commission whether to negotiate a new Lease Agreement with us, which expires this December, or to pursue alternate uses.
And this is why we are writing to you. It’s very important that we remain in our present space! ECOMB has been in this location since 2010; we have established a recycling drop-off station for single-stream recyclables, electronic waste, batteries, CFLs on our present site – the only of its kind within 1.5 hours of driving; have plans for a full renovation of the property into a LEED Certified green building; and to establish a variety of environmental education projects that will address issues related to climate change, recycling and litter prevention.
Thus, we are requesting the Mayor and City Commissioners the following:
- To renew ECOMB’s lease at its present leased space at 210 Second Street, Miami Beach.
- To strengthen its working relationship with ECOMB and to continue supporting the wonderful work it has done during the last 20 years in promoting a more sustainable and greener community.
- To support The Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches and its pursuit of a more sustainable future for all Miami Beach residents and visitors.

Seeing one hundred people stand with us for our home at Second Street feels surreal. This space is where I have poured my heart into our community programs, and knowing you value our work means the world to me.

I have spent hours looking through your signatures and reading the stories about how our center helped neighbors learn to live more sustainably. The silence from City Hall remains frustrating but your support gives me the strength to keep pushing for our home at 210 Second Street.

Ecomb is a very effective group who the City of Miami Beach should be Proud of. It is the 100th anniversary of Miami Beach. Are they celebrating by showing how backward they are or how forward Pro Sustainable tourism they are?
Please keep Ecomb in its present location with an extended lease. They do so much for the area that is vital to Miami Beach. Tourists care about the environment as well as residents. The public service ECOMB does is irreplaceable.
Please renew the lease and support the good work that ECOMB does. It's critical for us Beach residents who do not own a car to have a local recycling center for e-waste. Help us remain car free by renewing the lease - thanks!
Miami Beach has made important strides in becoming internationally recognized as a leader in green policy implementation. I believe it would be regressive to withdraw support for ECOMB, a recognized community resource in everything "green".
ECOMB is an asset to our community, and a continuation of their existing lease agreement will allow ECOMB to continue to focus on promoting sustainable living practices, fostering environmental stewardship and preserving our community’s ecology and not waste precious time searching for a new "home".
