There is a word for demanding something that belongs to others, and making threats (e.g. saying SO will leave the area if it doesn’t get whatever it wants). That word is extortion. The citizens of Sarasota will not stand for it.

Dear Joe McKenna, Fo someone who has devoted his life to music, you seem to be unable to listen. The public does not want or need your enormous concert hall in Payne Park. No matter how you try and spin it, you have proposed a massive privatization of public greenspace. In your monomaniacal pursuit of your vision, you have harmed the Orchestra’s reputation as a responsible member of our social fabric, In the best interests of the SO you love, you should withdraw this hairbrained elitist demand for corporate welfare, and start looking for an appropriate location to fulfill your edifice complex. Hint - that is not a public park.

Don't sell out the citizens of Sarasota (and it’s environment and wildlife). The orchestra can find an appropriate home without causing such a tragic end to a magical place that was meant for a different purpose. Stop the downtown concrete sprawl and do the right thing!

We need to preserve, protect and prevent the green space. The three story village being constructed is bad enough. DO NOT take away the wildlife and the habitat. Please consider the birds, bees and the other wildlife.

I lived in Sarasota since 1969 and this is just another example of a stupid idea from an out of town planner who has no vested interest in preserving Sarasota's beautiful charm. This is no doubt coming from the same people who authorized, no back in parking on the bayfront, downtown parking meters that didn't work, no impact fees/taxes for large downtown developments, no setbacks for mega story million dollar apartment buildings, authorizing speed bumps on streets for only the wealthy or politically connected, red light cameras, million dollar police security cameras that don't work. The city is being over developed to cater to the wealthy. At least you could leave one of our few remaining duck ponds alone. This stupid construction plan is not what the Payne family had in mind when they donated it to the City. You should respect and honor their land use clause for this piece of property. They will roll over in their graves if the City permits these to duck ponds to be filled in and covered with concrete in order to build yet another building for the exclusive. How about develop the bayfront for locals to have use of instead of for the exclusive Marina Jack Customers and rent-a-boat joke people. Oh, because the city gets their pockets greased from these folks.

Once again, another really bad idea in favor for the selected few. In the midst of unprecedented red tide events it would be a SMART idea to preserve as much green space as possible to offer natural alternatives to residents and tourists alike. It wouldn't be so bad if an ecologically SMART design was introduced, one that wouldn't intrude on the park's ponds and green space which can be done, its done all the time; it's a lost opportunity to show how ecologically progressive Sarasota claims it is. So sad to even consider...its like reverting back to times before we knew what the ecological loss would be, and now we know so much more yet its the same old- lets rip out the ponds for a parking lot! Are you kidding me?! Bad call!

This is a completely ridiculous idea! The City of Sarasota needs to stop sprawling out the hodge podge design of this city, especially downtown. You have restaurants and a car dealership on one block off of Main St. ,seriously? Main St. itself is a disaster filled with bars, restaurants and a whole lot of... realtors?! Wheres the common sense in zoning? The amount of ecological damage this idea imposes on the Alta Vista neighborhood and most importantly the wildlife so many people go to Payne Park to enjoy will be devastating. This is a residential location and habitat for many birds and other wildlife. Who in their right mind thinks it's a good idea to rip out all the ponds so that orchestras can play there? I cannot believe this idea is actually being proposed while so much of Sarasota has locations in dire need of revamping- that are not in residential locations and certainly don't have ponds that need ripping out. You people are unbelievable.

Preserve what the Payne family intended it for. CityAND countyhave eliminated enough Heritage. We have been here 86 yrs.Money Talks Land Walks. Too bad everybody didn't live here in the 50's and 60's.

My daughter & grand daughter lives there & I love visiting this park when I visit...how could you even think of destroying this beautiful area in the middle of your city that so many enjoy... not to even mention the precious wildlife that lives there. It will be a disgrace to your city if you allow this to happen. This was a gift given to your city by the Payne's... please leave it alone & let this beautiful area just thrive.. Thank you!

This park and green space is specifically a part of what years ago was proposed to maintain our green spaces. This park offers so much positive energy and activities to residents of all ages and it would be a disgrace to take land for yet another building in Sarasota when Sarasota is already being overbuilt! With 10 million spent by the City to establish this park, it is yet another disgrace to the tax payers of this community. We, as well as many other friends have enjoyed walking, biking and listening to live music at Cafe in the Park both on Friday evenings & Sunday afternoons consistently. Please DO NOT remove the environmental ambiance that is so desperately needed in our City limits.
