I disagree with railroading Fellows to do PhDs because it adds no additional value to the clinical teachers teaching ability. It appears to simply be a way of downgrading the Fellowship.

The rigor of the fellowship exams prepares successful fellows well enough for lecturing and clinical work.
It's well known that to succeed, fellows must deliver world class research. An attestation to this is that such research works are published almost without fail in top journals.
The question now is, will this add anything apart from the PHD degree to what exists presently? Will the new sets of resident doctors be trained in a different way?
