The Penguin Book of Norse Myths: Gods of the Vikings contains 32 stories from the creation through to Ragnarok. It has a good introduction and notes, glossary and bibliography at the end of the book. Used in conjunction with The Prose Edda: Norse Mythology a Penguin Classics, should provide enough material for a whole series of Marvel graphic novels on the Asgardians. Imagine if Marvel created a series of graphic novels using the artists and images from the video game Thor: God of Thunder Xbox 360, recreating the Myths of these classics. I'm sure there would be a huge market for such a collection, it would become a graphic novel classic in its own right.

Loki, the trickster god can shapeshift, that is one of his powers. Loki may appear as a female, but he is still a male god. This isn't the case for Thor, Marvel can do this, and some readers may accept it, but I'm convinced it's a mistake. I don't see it helping Marvel sales, the promotion of female superheroes or the ratings of Thor as a Marvel character.

Well lets all hope that the Hulk follows as the next female super hero in the steps of Thor.

I see no problem with this. If this new Thor ends up having a good background, good art style and good story lines then the REAL Marvel fans will follow the new Thor. Plus Loki, the trickster GOD, was a female once so why not Thor. Real Marvel fans don't care who is a female and who isn't as long as the characters have good story lines and are excellently drawn. Your silly signatures won't stop Marvel from doing this. This new Thor may end up having a successful run. Don't judge Marvel for doing this just yet. Actually wait until the first few are issues out, read em, then if you don't like it you can complain as much as you want.

Marvel has differentiated this to some extent but to loose ones name is worse than banishment and to live with that is unimaginable. For those whom justify This, Mjolnir gives the POWER of Thor not his name. And empowering women come on unless she has her own name, she is the shadow of the one before her man or woman. Other characters would be empowered that exist if this was the actual line of thought.

Thor is a god not a goddess, he has a wife named Sif. If Marvel need to have more leading female heroes then develop Sif's character. Whilst I can accept the comic/movie Thor character doesn't totally follow the Scandinavian myths of the Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturlson in the 12th century this is going to far even by Disney standards. Thor is the protector of mankind, husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif , they had a daughter Thrúd one of the valkyries who serve ale to the einherjar in Valhalla. He also fathered Magni; Móði, and is the stepfather of Ullr. It would be better if Marvel developed the stories from the Prose Edda with Sif based on Jaimie Alexander's character along with Frigga and Eir played by Rene Russo and Alice Krige.
The Prose Edda is the most renowned of all works of Scandinavian literature and our most extensive source for Norse mythology. It tells of the Norse creation, battles of the gods, giants, dwarves and elves struggle for survival. It also preserves the oral memory of heroes, warrior kings and queens. The Edda provides unparalleled insight into the gods' tragic realization that the future holds one final cataclysmic battle, Ragnarok, when the world will be destroyed. There should be enough material in there for a female heroine for Disney to build upon without the ridicules idea of a female Thor.

Thor's power is held within Mjölnir, and whilst it may be plausible that another god, goddess or being with a spirit worthy of wielding Thor's hammer could do so, they wouldn't be Thor. Whether this female is an Asgardian or from another realm in the universe she will have a name. Are Marvel trying to say Thor is just another name, like say John and hasn't any great significance. I suspect not, they seem to be saying the name Thor goes with the hammer Mjölnir.
If that's the case then only Thor can wield it, others who have done so in the Marvel universe must therefore have become Thor, but this wasn't the case. Therefore if Thor is disgraced and unworthy of Mjölnir, he still remains Thor and this female goddess or being from one of the other nine realms has to have her own identity. Marvel could run with this, if they think that's the way to introduce a new super-heroine, it may or may not succeeded but it has an element of plausibility about it which Thor becoming a female just doesn't have.

If this is true will never read or watch another thing produced by Marvel ever again been collecting these comics since i was a kid
And Thor was Thor before he had Mjölnir so how can just having Mjölnir and the powers actually make you Thor
Doesn't make any sense if Marvel wanted a female character with Thor's powers just do the same that they did with Beta Ray Bill
Marvel are just about to destroy a character that has been around for years just for some type of stupid reason

It is plain to see you are not a true fan of the Thor character or you would not agree with the change. Would you feel the same ay if they changed Captain America or Wolverine to a woman?

It was very dumb to do that Marvel because 1.You will lose many fans of Thor
because of this and 2.It's offensive to people who still believe the Norse religion.

I have been reading Thor comics since I was a kid. I totally agree with everyone on here. Thor is Thor! If someone else wields Mjolnir they may get his powers, but he remains Thor! This whole concept is ridiculous. Why don't they just give her a hammer similar to Thor's if they want a new female character. I refuse to buy any of these new books. No Captain American either. These changes make no sense.

As I've stood and stared into the well and pondered, all that can be said is take the advice of the wisdom of the gods of Asgard. I think there is an overwhelming consensus on this forum that Thor is the god of thunder. That the concept of Thor as a female rather a male superhero is flawed.
