I just read the news about the removal of the message boards. I am - well, just shocked and cannot understand why you would want them gone. I've been a member of the IMDb for 16 years (and I am certain I went on it well before then) and not a day goes past where I'm not looking up some facet of a film on that thing and reading the comments from people. I can't believe you think it's antiquated -- it's one of the best things on the Internet, period.
I really wish you would reconsider this. The way you make it seem is that the lack of traffic there doesn't make sense to keep them going - perhaps it's because you have to register before you can see them and people just don't want to register thinking they will get tons of spam? As far as "negative content" - well, geez...sometimes people just don't love every single film...it's called "variety" and everyone who is a grown individual recognizes the fact that not everyone loves the same film as they do. And everyone recognizes a stupid comment made by a troll by now as well. Even with negative comments, I've never had a more enjoyable experience online reading anything...than at those message boards. It is my go-to place for all things film.
I honestly cannot see where the alternate routes even make sense for each film. This is the biggest mistake in the history of the Internet if you ask me. Seriously...huge mistake.

The IMDb message boards have always attracted internet trolls but these trolls usually collect around the boards for the most recent movies or the politics board. I will miss discussing movies that are 20+ years old and learning from other film lovers.

I've been a member since God knows when and I'd miss this place terribly. Shutting down the message boards simply because a few numpties are too stupid to hit the ignore button, is ridiculous.

I agree that the message boards are not a "positive experience", but this is kind of a nuclear option. I would drain the pool for awhile and then figure out a way to stop a minority of people from p*ssing in it.

The message boards is the only think that makes IMDb unique. All of it's other content can be found nearly everywhere else online. I would venture to say that nearly all of the regularly visitors to IMDb are there for the message boards. To do away with them would surely usher in the demise of IMDb as it would no longer be relevant. I think the big wigs at IMDb are out of touch with what the public wants from it. The message boards are a must for the majority of users. It is the place to come to discuss movies, t.v. shows, actors, and celebrities. Do away with that and there simply is no reason to continue visiting this site.

I don't post at all but I am the biggest lurker on the message boards. I can see where the company is coming from, like youtube comments the message board has been dominated by trolls. But it's still my number #1 site to go to after seeing a movie, shoot I just did it with Split to learn more from other viewers. Shame

I love to read the message boards as well when I look up a movie. IMDB wouldn't be even half as good without them.

Leave the board open. Where else to discuss movies if not on t h e movie data base of all movie sites. This decision is inconceivable ;)

Leave the message board intact. I do not use twitter or facebook or any other social media. This is the only outlet for me to talk to people across the globe about my favorite subject: movies and TV shows. Do not take the board away. This is s a free speech issue.

The fact that the boards are shutting down saddens me almost beyond words. I have genuinely learned more about film through my decade of the message boards then I did in the four years in college where I studied film history. They mean so much to me in more ways than I could count.

The Boards are why i'm a member of the this. It's fun to see all the comments of your favourite movies or shows. people that can't handle the boards , (i.e. probably the celebrities themselves) show grow up and deal with it. Fame is a double edged sword.

You are simply wrong - or outright dissembling - when you suggest that discussion is going on at Facebook and Twitter that outweighs your forums. First, social media is not set up for real "discussion" and most people who frequent them aren't there for that reason; second, many of us don't use social media for a variety of reasons. If you want to cast us off that's your business of course, but I am not the only person who spent a significant amount of money on Amazon as a direct consequence of the significant time I spent on IMDb. I have had mixed feelings about the obvious and utter contempt Amazon has had for it's own forum users and IMDb, and it's focus on nothing but the bottom line always (is this REALLY what our bright future was supposed to be? Can't Mr. Bezos et al foresee a world where there is something in addition to profit that's valuable?) - but I have continued to buy from Amazon because of the generally good service and the enormous variety. I'm starting to reconsider that now and I know thousands - maybe tens of thousands - are as well.
None of this probably matters a hill of beans to you guys, because you don't care where the "hill of beans' quote even comes from anymore, and it's a hill of cash that is all that matters to you. Sad that supposed liberals are now fully content to live in the world that Ayn Rand promised. Goodbye.
