Best teacher I ever had that believed in me and made my love for dance better and fun and allowed me to be in Dance Company and could talk to her about any of my inner struggles.

This woman instilled confidence in me. She saw potential in me that I had not yet recognized in myself. She gave me opportunities to explore the creativity she saw in me. Without her, I literally would not be where I am today. A degree in dance, choreographing for music videos. I owe my stage presence as a recording artist to this woman. She is beautiful inside and out and has nothing but genuine passion towards every student she encounters. Caring both about our development as dancers and as people. Providing outlet and ear. Generations to come need this woman.

I love her work. She’s the reason why i’m continuing dance and always pushing myself to do better. She makes so many powerful pieces that brings everyone together. She always make sure we are happy and working our hardest everyday. We all love her and i would hate to see her leave! :(

I am a tap dancer from Tennessee, and thus, I was not fortunate enough to have been able to attend James Hubert Blake High School. In the six years since I started learning, I have developed an immense passion and love for the art. I do not have any formal training except for private lessons and self-teaching.
When I heard about the tap program at Blake, I was encouraged by the fact that such programs exist in public high schools. To my knowledge, no such program exists in any of our public high schools in Tennessee. While I believe that all forms of dance should be forwarded the same level of respect, I think it is so important for tap dance to be made a focal point of every dancer’s training. It teaches technique, posture, musicality, as well as confidence, discipline, and creativity.
When I heard about Blake High’s intentions to cut this and other arts programs, I felt that I need to say something as a tap dancer who started late in life and recognizes its importance to a dancer’s growth. I also recognize what a difference teachers like Danielle D’Anna has made in the lives of the students who have come through her program. Mrs. D’Anna is a person with an intuitive vision that very few possess. She has built this unique tap program from the ground up, and a number of students have honed their talents and become consummate performers under D’Anna’s tutelage.
Such teachers do more than teach kids how to shuffle ball change. They learn about life, responsibility, and about courage and resilience when times get difficult. D’Anna has set an example for so many people of high school age who seek to gain valuable dance training at this stage in their lives. I am imploring the administration of James Hubert Blake High School not to cut its tap dance program, and to please keep Mrs. Danielle D’Anna at the school for the sake of all current and future students and aspiring tap dancers.

As a parent and teacher in MCPS, I am saddened to hear that the very person, Danielle D'Anna ,who helped establish the very successful dance program at James Hubert Blake is being cut. Community input and student input was obviously not considered which is extremely concerning. The dance and music departments are such an integral part of Blake as a performing arts school and they contributed to the success of many who graduated and continued in the industry. Let's not limit students' experiences and opportunities when that is what drew so many to Blake.

Mrs. D’Anna gave people hope. She gave people a place to express themselves through art. Not just girls but boys as well. I have never had her as my teacher but talking to her is always amazing. She has helped me grow in so many ways! #DownforD’Anna

I don’t know her personally, but from the shows that Blake has promoted, all the students are amazing and you can see how she works hard to make them the best. This is an arts school, dance is a big part of that. Blake needs her.

Ms. D’Anna helped me reconnect with my love of dance and movement. The dance program at Blake is such an important outlet for so many students, and Ms. D’Anna is the heart of that program. Her passion for her students, for Blake and for the arts is unrivaled. She has more than earned her place at Blake, and all of her accomplishments reflect positively on Blake and it’s signsture program. It would be a travesty and a disservice to the entire Blake community to see her go.
