I am so lucky I was able to choose a home birth for my two low risk pregnancies. I was able to avoid the inherited risks of intervention and cascade of effects that are prevalent in hospitals. I was able to not choke the system and leave a spot for a high risk pregnancy. And I was able to follow the advice of the world health organisation which recommends home birth for low risk pregnancy.

My home birth was the most amazing experience of my life. Government policies have no right to take this away from women. A home birth is the most normal birth you can have, you just have a baby. More things go wrong in the hospital for women because of unnecessary interventions. Most likely a woman who has a home birth won't come close to needing an episiotomy, a c-section or even drug intervention, all of which are very risky unless absolutely necessary. We need to promote normal birth. Who's even making this decision? A man? A man who's never and will never have a vagina and give birth to a baby??

There will always be women who choose to home birth. Lets ensure practitioners are registered and insured for the safety of mother, baby and practitioner.

Every woman deserves the right to choose to have a home birth and midwives should be congratulated for caring for them. To prevent them doing this will only lead to women free birthing and poir outcomes. Wake up Australia!

If insurance can't be arranged, just get rid of the need for insurance entirely! It was so much easier and cheaper to access a private midwife 8 years ago......and if it becomes any more difficult for a midwife to support womens informed choices, or for women to access homebirth, it's going to come back to bite the government. Women will not stop choosing the best place to birth - and midwives will not stop supporting women in the perfect way they were called to do. What sort of a back-wash country is this when ALL women don't have the choice to birth at home?! It is embarrassing and shameful!

Women have the right to choose their own birth plan... why is the Australian medical system so against this... I had my first child in the car on route to hospital and opted for a home birth second time around. We are saving public hospitals thousands by choosing to birth at home. I am sick and tired of all the negativity that surrounds home birthing, mothers that choose this option and the amazing midwives that provide choice for families.

It should be a basic standard of care that every woman can be supported in whatever way she chooses to birth!! And this includes having a registered midwife attend her homebirth a provide prenatal and antenatal care!!

If private midwives cannot remain exempt from PI insurance requirements, more women will birth without a registered health professional, which is not OK if its not their preferred choice! Please make it a permanent exemption from PI requirements for midwife to attend births at home.
Please don't find an insurance product because it will no doubt exclude many women who fall outside of "normal". Homebirth needs to remain a real choice for every woman!

I am an Indeoendent/private Midwife in the Uk & we faced exactly this difficulty in 2014. Thankfully we have overcome this & are still able to offer women & families the choice they should have every right to make.
