We, the undersigned students, parents, and concerned members of the Pomona College community, respectfully bring to your attention a pressing issue that has affected many students residing in the college dorms. As temperatures have risen in recent years, especially with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 108°F, many dorms remain without air conditioning.
This situation is not only uncomfortable but also poses significant health risks. Students, including freshmen like my daughter, are struggling to sleep and concentrate in such conditions, which directly impacts their well-being and academic performance.
We understand that energy consumption concerns have been a barrier to installing air conditioning in all dorms. As a solution, we propose exploring the use of solar power combined with lithium-ion battery storage to offset the energy demands of air conditioning units. By investing in renewable energy solutions, Pomona College can maintain its commitment to sustainability while ensuring the health and comfort of its students.
We kindly urge the college administration to prioritize student well-being by installing air conditioning in all dormitories, and we hope you will consider exploring sustainable energy options to make this possible.

The rising temperatures in California make getting AC in all of the dorms a necessity rather than a luxury. Students need sleep in order to be able to focus on their studies, but nobody can sleep in temperatures like this. Although my own daughter has AC in her dorm, she has many friends who do not and are suffering. Please do what you can to solve this problem ASAP.
In addition to the heat and the smoke (no opening windows!), the school has not implemented their own heat mitigation plan - there is only one mattress in Harwood lounge, and that's because a student dragged it there. There is no longer an excuse to not put in AC in all dorms.
Our daughter has medications that need to be above 60 and below 77 and her current dorm room has been well into the upper 90 and 100 this year. Unacceptable!
Utilize California's most abundant resource - solar, plus some lithium-ion batteries, the school should be able to make each dorm self sustainable. Itself should be able to pay the school back in 10 years and save school money in the long run.
My first year daughter has been sleeping in the floor of someone else’s room for a week. She is severely sleep deprived and has trouble focusing in class
It’s entirely too hot for the kids to live with no AC.
Kids need AC in 107 F

To hear year after year that nothing can be done when the tuition keeps going up and we see new centers and other fancy buildings being erected, is unconscionable
