The call for the appointment of a qualified National Librarian/CEO at the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) is both timely and necessary. Our profession, like others such as the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the South African Nursing Council (SANC), deserves the same level of respect and recognition. The omission of the title "National Librarian" and the reduction of Library and Information Science (LIS) qualifications from a requirement to merely a preference is not only concerning but undermines the importance of having a leader with the appropriate expertise and qualifications in our field.
It is crucial that we advocate for the appointment of someone who holds a degree in Library Science or a related field, reinforcing the idea that effective management and direction of the NLSA must be rooted in a deep understanding of library science. Just as we expect qualified professionals in healthcare and nursing to lead their respective fields, we should demand nothing less for our libraries. By ensuring that the leadership of the NLSA is held by a qualified individual, we can safeguard the integrity and future of this invaluable institution. Let us stand united in our petition for a respectful and qualified appointment that recognizes the significance of our profession.

Take our profession very serious. LIS is a profession and we study for Four years. Now we recommend you to align the job and the requirements. In this case, we require the MLS qualification for the CEO of National Librarian. It is not right for the politicians to just dictate terms to us the Information Professionals.
