As a qualified librarian, I’m deeply concerned about the appointment of unqualified individuals. This undermines our profession and the vital role libraries play in educating and empowering communities.

Any process that failed to recognize professionalism and transparency is dead on arrival. Integrity of this great profession must be protected for national development.

As a dedicated librarian practitioner, I strongly support this petition. The role of National Librarian is not just administrative—it is foundational to the integrity, vision, and mandate of the National Library of South Africa. Diluting LIS qualifications and omitting the title "National Librarian" threatens the profession and undermines the critical work of preserving and promoting South Africa’s documentary heritage.

National Librarian represents the country and the LIS field at the Centre's for Directors of national libraries (DCNL) of the world.at IFLA and other international conferences. It is a position that requires someone to represent the country, preserve national heritage in line with indigenous knowledge preservation.

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the recent developments surrounding the hiring process for the leadership vacancy at the National Library of South Africa (NLSA). The re-advertisement of this crucial position, with the omission of the title "National Librarian" and the dilution of Library and Information Science (LIS) qualifications from a requirement to a preference, raises serious questions about the integrity of the process and the future of this vital institution. We note that Section 9 of the National Library of South Africa Act (Act 92 of 1998) specifies that the Board must appoint a chief executive officer, who is also known as the National Librarian, and is responsible for the management of the affairs of the National Library.

Itcis illegal for the Board to even consider appointing a non qualified librarian. How can we professionalize public service when individuals who are supposed to upload good governance actually are the one acting unethical.
