The administration saw the pressure and finally backed down on their policy. We won our cords back because you refused to let them dismiss our academic and cultural sacrifices. Keep your eyes open to make sure they do not try to pull this stunt again next year.

As of this year for the Spring 2018 graduation students who have push there academic comfort zone and cultural competency to the next level are being disregarded. A highly publicised department known as the Study Abroad Office (which was approved by the MSMC institution) advertised the semester abroad programs as an academic challenge where students are pushed to conquer their classes AND the culture of a new country. However the receiving of cords by students who have completed and ACCELERATED( in any) study abroad semester is as of this year NO LONGER receiving a cord. The students who were accepted into a study abroad semester had to apply, receive letters of recommendations, meet a respected academic status and be accepted to attend the program while competing for a spot for the abroad semester.
-Additionally, the signing of this petition should lead to recognition of students’ academic and cultural accomplishment through the continuation of receiving commencement cords.
*By signing this petition you are agreeing that the completion of a study abroad semester requires:
- Academic perseverance
- The obtaining of cultural competency via immersing oneself in roots of foreign country
- Sacrifice of academic comforts ex: (taking classes on home campus or online)
- The skill of building a professional relationship with administrators, professors and other students/peers who are from other countries outside of the United States.
- Adaptability to new social norms, currency, traditions, customs, and education style all of which can be applied to further careers and daily interactions.

The Study Abroad Office clearly expected us to roll over and accept this insult but they clearly underestimated how much we value our accomplishments. We have real momentum now and it is time to force these administrators to finally acknowledge the work we put in.

We need to promote culture and diplomacy in our kids. Programs like this are a big step in creating well rounded adults with experience abroad.
I find it terribly disturbing that such a poor example is being made by the school. These students participated in a program with understanding and trust in the program. It’s horrible that upon completion they are not to receive their well earned rewards. Shameful!!!
If I didn't walk with those cords, I wouldn't of walked with any cords last year. Those cords symbolize one of our fondest memories in our college experience. There is absolutely no reason that the girls who studied with me, and all other graduates of the 2018 class who studied abroad through Mount Saint Mary should not be permitted to wear those cords.

When we signed up for study abroad our teachers were excited to tell us we would be receiving the cordes. We worked hard and it would be a shame to take away our reward we were promised for our accomplishments.

As a student studying abroad summer 2018, Id be devastated to not receive a cord for traveling abroad
