I Petition Governor Chris Christie and the New Jersey Court System to lower bail

Aakash is a 20 year old Rutgers College student, without any prior criminal record, who has been in the Bergen County Jail, spending 21 hours a day in solitary confinement, for the last 150 days. The primary charge against Aakash is regarding his alleged involvement in throwing Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in Bergen County.  The attack on the synagogue in fact was carried out by another individual who is currently under arrest and awaiting trial. Aakash was in New Hampshire campaigning for Ron Paul in the 2012 Republican Presidential Primary on that day.

The original bail of $2.5 million was reduced by the appellate court to $1 million in recognition of the unjust bail amount.  Just as the Dalal family was to post the bail, the Prosecutor arrested Aakash on new allegations of a so-called “conspiracy” to kill the prosecutor assigned to the case from a convicted felon who is a “bloods gang member” facing deportation.  As a result, the court imposed more bail on the case.

This petition is not meant to address Aakash's guilt or innocence but to address the extremely high bail amount and the current conditions to which Aakash is subjected to at the Bergen County Jail.

Aakash's constitutional rights are being repeatedly violated during this Pre-trial phase.  Specifically, he is being kept in solitary confinement for 21 hours a day. In addition, he remains jailed on $4 Million bail ($3 Million of which is required in cash or cash equivalent).  By way of comparison, bail wasn't set this high even for those associated with providing assistance to the 9/11 terrorists.

The extremely high bail amount is in direct violation of Aakash's constitutional rights under the 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Please stop this Injustice. Lower the BAIL
