The school board reversed the mandate and masks are now optional for the upcoming year. I am incredibly relieved that our children can return to a normal classroom experience this fall. Thank you for staying the course until our students were finally heard.

We, the undersigned, petition the Whitefish Bay (WFB) school board to rescind the June 23, 2021, revision of policy 453 requiring face masks for unvaccinated WFB school students related to the coronavirus. The absolute risk of COVID-19 in Milwaukee County is 0.00004 or 0.004% of the population. Students wearing face masks do not reduce the relative coronavirus risk.
There are multiple Northshore schools and school districts that are making masks optional due to a lack of evidence of the effectiveness of masks on children. Some examples of those school districts and schools currently planning masks optional are:

Cedarburg
New Berlin
Germantown
Elmbrook
Arrowhead
Oak Creek
Franklin
USM (University School) Summer School
St. Robert’s School
Eastbrook Academy
Further, coronavirus vaccines are not available for children less than 12 years of age. With the advice of our medical consultants, we petition that student face masks be optional for the 2021-2022 academic year.

I have been hearing from so many parents who just want the best for their children as we look toward the start of the year. My inbox is full of messages from neighbors who are tired of this uncertainty and want their kids to have a normal school experience again. I am currently reaching out to board members to ensure they understand exactly how many of us feel about this policy.

COVID incidents in the school district seemed low even during the worst of outbreak. This vaccination rate in WFB is unbelievably high. Children often need to see teachers speak and enunciate words for effective learning. In addition, many children he complained that it is harder to breath indoors wearing a mask, especially during hot weather.
Influenza is more deadly than COVID to kids but we never made kids wear masks during flu season.
It would seem that businesses allow no masks for those vaccinated so schools should follow suit.
Follow the science...humans take in oxygen & expel carbon dioxide. Masking interferes with this healthy process. Mental and physical harmful effects mandating a mask.
Our children deserve to be in a place that allows free thinking. There is enough science proving this can be optional, at this point. Having to wear a mask is breaking their spirits. Please do what is absolutly possible, with the children's best interest, in mind.
Define “valid”? If the intent is to gauge the temperature of a community it is sufficient and has captured a good sample. This is not a legally binding document but an indicator of direction and velocity which is one basis for qualitative research. I find this survey to be valuable.

The risk of a WFB high school student getting Covid is very minimal, the risk of an unvaccinated WFB high school student being bullied and harassed is close to 100%. Why are our schools making the kids wear their vaccination status on their faces? With such high community vaccination rate and low cases, the mask mandate for unvaccinated teens in not necessary. We don't know all the reasons why one is or not vaccinated, but we have to protect them from being bullied and harassed. Please consider making the mask policy in the context of our community vaccination and infection numbers. These numbers are in much support of mask optional learning environment.
