I've been taking Vitamin D for several years now and have never felt better. This can help all Canadians - I totally support Alan Markin and Pure North and request Health Canada re-evaluate Vitamin D Guidelines

I've been taking over 12000 IU a day for well over a year, and have felt only benefits, and definitely no adverse affects. Please review the research out there and update the guidelines so all Canadians can benefit from this simple solution. Thank you!

It is so important to get this right. I had severe arthritis before taking vitamin D supplements. My starting Vitamin D level was 8ng/ml. I started supplements with 1000IU but was unable to get and keep my levels above 20ng/ml until I was taking 2500IU daily with 5000IU additional once a week Dec-Feb.

Pure North is a wellness initiative that should be supported and listened to. Vitamin D needs to be examined by Health Canada!

As a cancer survivor, I am aware of evidence-based medicine supporting the preventative value of Vitamin D. One of the problems with health research in Canada and the US is that publicly funded research granting agencies increasingly require private sector partners to provide matching funds. These corporations do not see an opportunity for capital enhancement in carrying out research on factors like Vitamin D that cannot be patented. The Harper government's recent decision to overhaul the funding structure for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research will further intensify the support of commercializable research with private sector partners, by requiring that tax dollars be spent in partnership with private corporations. This change involves billions of dollars, and is in effect a subsidy to pharmaceuticals, biotech companies, and other companies that can patent their products or claim the "intellectual property" value of them. While there is a role for this kind of research, research on preventative health in the public interest is being increasingly neglected.

I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency despite taking a supplement regularly. After a prescription of 50,000 IU daily for 3 months my levels were back in the normal range.

Revised definitions of vitamin d's role in physiology have to be mandated to include the extra-renal paracrine and autocrine and changes in the recommendations need to reflect the physiological requirements which is assessed by blood level. Minimum level is more rightly targeted at the 50 ng/ml. In achieving and maintaining an adequate level, dosing frequency is as important as level. Therefore supplementing every one to three days is far better than spaced out large bolus doses. The public is far too educated to continue to follow outdated, economic and politically contorted recommendations, that do nothing but perpetuate the continuation of not addressing preventable diseases and syndromes and/or ameliorating the expression thereof, by the inclusion of not having vitamin d repletion and adequacy as a requirement in the SOC. Accountability of the IOM in this regards surely needs to be assessed.
