Revised definitions of vitamin d's role in physiology have to be mandated to include the extra-renal paracrine and autocrine and changes in the recommendations need to reflect the physiological requirements which is assessed by blood level. Minimum level is more rightly targeted at the 50 ng/ml. In achieving and maintaining an adequate level, dosing frequency is as important as level. Therefore supplementing every one to three days is far better than spaced out large bolus doses. The public is far too educated to continue to follow outdated, economic and politically contorted recommendations, that do nothing but perpetuate the continuation of not addressing preventable diseases and syndromes and/or ameliorating the expression thereof, by the inclusion of not having vitamin d repletion and adequacy as a requirement in the SOC. Accountability of the IOM in this regards surely needs to be assessed.

I have been studying Vitamin D research papers for 8 years. I am astounded at the ignorance that is still floating around.

I can't believe that it's been over 100 years since the discovery of Sunlight & Vitamin D and over 40 years since the Garland study on Latitude and cancer showing almost perfectly U-shaped curves of many internal cancers showing an inverse relationship to intensity of UVB. Humans evolved in regions of higher sunlight and UVB and historically have received enough sunlight year round to produce upwards of 8-10,000 IU daily from regular exposure. The documentation is there but the IOM didn’t want to even hear of it. Experts in the field of Vitamin D have recommending 4-10,000 IU for many years now without any detriment or toxicity along with regular full body exposure to sunlight (UV light) on a regular basis year round to maintain a healthy blood level of 25(OH)3 (Vitamin D) of 60 ng/ml which is a normal level for those living in a sunny environment with minimal clothing year round. I support policies for the maintenance of optimal health and prevention of disease. The RDA for vitamin D needs to be re-evaluated by the IOM and Health Canada.

If vitamin D3 were discovered now, it would be a 'miracle drug.' To cite one example, multiple sclerosis probably is related to D deficiency (expecially pre-natal & natal). The savings to the health care system are also significant. Provincial governments should advocate (and also provide) for the use of 5,000 IU pills instead of promoting risky vaccines. Big pharma will do their utmost to either stop such action or try to take it over and make it more expensive. D3 is 'dirt cheap' compared to anything else available for raising general health levels.

I am 75 years old and take 4000 iu at noon and 4oooIu at midnight and my vitamin level went from 50 to 63 blood lab analysis .I prefer to error on the side of safety then to be on the low side each individual is different .

i fully support much higher doses of Vit D for optimum health. I take 4/5 thousand iu per day and i am on the bottom level of what i actually need.
