Petition for Continued Maintenance and Access to Two-Way Email Correspondence Through the med.wayne.edu Subdomain

These email addresses are an important part of our developing professional identity. Being able to contact physicians, program directors, etc. especially those who are WSUMED alumni gives students an initial level of credibility that cannot be matched my a generic email address that all university students share. Being able to use the med.wayne.edu address gives students a great sense of accomplishment much like putting on WSUMED white coat and this tradition needs to be continued.

Had no idea this was going to happen during the middle of the year when we are using this professional email account that people know me as. To change it know would possibly lose current connections

The email handle "@med.wayne.edu" is not just a placemarker, but a way of intra & inter-professional communication. It is not meant to categorize students; rather, it allows for professional discourse. Also, why change the handle when there have been no issues as a result of it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are many more pressing issues that the school could stand to address.

I like my med.wayne email account, and often use it to contact SOM faculty.

Don't take away our med.wayne.edu emails!

I must echo the sentiments of my peers. By removing the @med directory, I fear that my communications with faculty, physicians, externship directors, residency programs, and researchers may be overlooked. Email domains for medical students serve as an announcement of our status before an email is even opened, so that recipients of our emails may prioritize our correspondence more easily and as they see fit. Additionally, these accounts are our primary way of staying connected and verifying involvement in the Co-Curricular program and medical student organizations. I hope that Wayne State considers the impact that removing this domain will have before making any decisions, and in the future I hope that students affected by such changes are notified in an official manner instead of just word-of-mouth.

If I saw "[email protected]" my first thought would be to delete the message and consider it to be spam. If I, as a medical student, would do that then I can definitely believe that any application system, PI, doctor or superior I send emails to would do the exact same thing as me. Our email is essential in distinguishing ourselves as medical students. For as much as we put into our career from undergrad, volunteering, working and studying currently in school, we deserve to have at least an email address to validate our positions as candidates for an MD degree. I am appalled that Wayne would even consider removing our email address and through this, devalue our positions as medical students.

As one of the representatives for the class of 2019's professionalism committee I am very opposed to the proposed change. The .med.wayne.edu email addresses help to identify us as medical students when communicating online in our professional capacities. The seperate domain also allows us to easily communicate within the SOM as even if you do not have someone's address, you can simple type in a few letters of their name and their address will pop up. The .med.wayne.edu domain along with our abbreviated actual names as our address, allows the recipient to readily identify the sender as a trustworthy contact. "[email protected]" conveys no identifying information whatsoever, and could easily be perceived by many recipients with suspicion. However the most important feature the seperate domain offers is an additional level of security, given that only a very small amount of users are given access per year, in contrast to the main .wayne.edu domain. This is most troubling to me personally, because we can't know what vulnerabilities this may expose us to. What happens if for example a .wayne.edu address sends out a spam mail and is tagged by gmail as a spam sender and our emails are automatically moved to someone's spam folder? Privacy and security in our communication is something that is not only expected from us by our peers, future patients, and professional communities but also required by law. As a MEDICAL student I am against this change and I hope the main campus will realize that these proposed changes are unacceptable.

The @med.wayne.edu subdomain is very important for our professional identity as medical students. It is used for communicating with clinical faculty, other medical students in professional organizations and in applying for residencies. Please allow us to keep our current @med.wayne.edu email account!

It will create much hassle to transfer all the contacts from the established med.wayne.edu email. Also it helps to create a tighter community among medical trainees and physicians. Please consider keeping the current email accounts active. Thank you!

Having the @med.wayne.edu email is fundamental to being a medical student. It is important because it communicates our status as medical students whenever we email faculty or physicians we are reaching out to that our emails come from future-professionals in their field. Having the @med directory makes finding the addresses of said physicians much easier, and would be a big mistake to take away. With the recent LCME report, I find it repulsive, frankly, that this step backwards is remotely being considered.

Please let us keep our medical school emails. They serve to distinguish us as members of a professional community.

There's not a lot we have to show right now for the work we're putting in on a daily basis. This email address is something substantial, however, and it would be a great disservice to us as students to remove our ties to such a prestigious medical school from our primary means of communication with the rest of the professional world.

I may need my @med.wayne.edu account to seem like an actual medical student when applying to externship programs and research positions. I don't want my emails to be overlooked because they were mistaken for spam-bot emails.

This should be a no brainer.

I have done the due diligence in undergrad to at least deserve this small recognition of where I'm at in my medical education. I understand it may not be the most convenient, but neither is having bed bugs in the medical school library. We as medical students deserve some delineation between ourselves and the undergraduate students, since we have graduated from those ranks to be a part of a distinguished student body.

I'm afraid that taking away my med email could impact me professionally because it will be more difficult to associate myself with the WSU SOM but more than that I feel that it makes the WSU SOM look less professional in being the only medical school I've ever heard of without its own email server. I can understand why its more convenient for IT to only use one server but I think there are better ways to streamline that don't have as much potential impact on students' professional identities.
