Petition for Continued Maintenance and Access to Two-Way Email Correspondence Through the med.wayne.edu Subdomain

The @med.wayne.edu address utilizing the name components is the most easily recognizable and memorable way to provide email services to the medical students. As we need to contact professionally and efficiently, eliminating the ease of this feature is not only going to hurt current medical students, but also anyone who utilized the system prior and had that contact information that way. This is not what needs to be done. Leave the domain intact.

Eliminating this e-mail sub-domain is absurd. Everything from trying to contact physicians outside the Wayne State system to communicating with other students is expedited by having an easy identifier in the e-mail domain that the sender of a particular e-mail is part of a medical school. I don't not see why this is being eliminated.

My med.wayne.edu email address is the contact information I have given to all professional contacts I have made over the past three years in medical school. I also feel like it is of utmost importance to use the med.wayne.edu address to apply for residencies next year.

It's absurd that this is even being considered.

This could damage our contact information in the residency application process as we were advised to communicate through the med.Wayne account.

Going to suck to lose it since I do 100% of professional communication via this account.

Please allow us to keep our emails.

This is an unacceptable move on the part of administration and just proves how little regard they have for the students at the school of medicine. These email addresses help with our professional persona whether it's contacting physicians for the World Health Student Organization or using the email as our primary form of communication with potential residency programs. Furthermore, it is appalling that this matter was not brought to the attention of students prior to this. I hope that the administration will realize the detriment that this will cause students and will not continue in this ill-advised endeavor.

The loss to our med e-mail accounts would significantly impair my ability to communicate with residency programs. They usually expect to receive email from a med or edu address, and it would be considered unprofessional to send messages through gmail or an account composed of random numbers and letters.

Please don't change this. This is a privilege we've earned.

When was the administration planning on sharing this information, considering my email is apparently being converted within the next week?

In this electronic Era, pride in my email address is pride in my school and my profession. Patients, clients, and colleagues understand and respect the Wayne in our addresses; the med takes it above and beyond. Words have meaning!

Why is there a need to change our email addresses when the lights in the men's bathroom in Mazurek Education Commons (where students who are interviewing for our school go if they need to use the restroom) have been broken for months? How come it took 4 months to change the broken lights in the computer room all first and second years use to take their exams? There are many more issues at the school. This email change is unnecessary for many reasons.

It's a shame that Wayne looks to the privileges of its students when determining where to cut back financially. Pretty offensive to treat us that way really.

This change would be an extreme detriment to our current and future professional identities and reflects poorly on the medical school and university. The lack of official notice of a change of this magnitude is inappropriate and frankly unprofessional on the part of the administration.

Wow..can't believe this is happening. I don't need to list what others have listed but do we need LCME to look into this again? Hipaa violations?

As a fourth year student, why would you even consider this?

Having a @med.institution email is vital to a medical student's credibility. It is how we can conduct conversations with residents and attendings alike, and fosters a sense of teamwork. Entering medical school is finally entering the field of healthcare, and to take away one of the markers of our status is in poor taste. We are young professionals who have worked hard to get to this point in our lives, and we should not be subjected to further questioning from outsiders if we begin to email using @ab1234 email addresses. Furthermore, our @med.wayne.edu accounts protect us from HIPPA, and as third and fourth years and student run clinics use our emails communicate regarding patients/hospital occurings, our emails our vital. I wonder how it would bode for WSUSOM if they dared to take away all of the DMC doctors, fellows, and residents' @med.wayne.edu accounts in order to "streamline" email across institutions. Please give us medical students the same respect you would give to any other working professional in the healthcare field. We may not be earning money yet, but we are just as passionate and dedicated to the field as those working.
