Petition for City of West Branch to reconsider Cedar's Edge Golf Course

I grew up during the Greenview Era when Mike & Mary McCarty owned the course, pool, and country club. My first memory was being a ring bearer in my cousins wedding, and the reception was at Greenview. As a West Branch Football ballboy, I remember team meals on Friday at the Country Club. The weekends were always busy for dinner. I swam in the pool. Overnight stays with Chad McCarty and friends when we would raid the Clubhouse, drive golf carts, or play football on the iced over pond (OK that was stupid). I was on the golf team during the 1989-1992 seasons; 4 State Championships!! The birth of UI Hall of Famer, State Medalist, and PGA pro Sean McCarty, Chad, JD Grimm and others who played collegiate or competitively beyond high school. It was a course that drew golfers from afar. My daughter Mattie joined WB golf as a Freshman and due to poor business decisions, upleep, and liability, their team was forced to play at Elks this past season. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to hear Jerry Sexton take over. I planned to purchase 2 memberships along with Mattie playing her sophomore year for the Bears. I realize both sides have details to work out, however the road seems to be a non-issue. If a developer wants to add a tax base and improvements this should be a given. The golf course should be of interest to the City regardless of a developer coming into the equation. The City should be working with Mr Sexton to build the Clubhouse/Events Center. While a private business may be invested, the City has been incapable of investing in its residents by failing on recreational options. This has been the discussion for 20 years, yet no progress aside from a baseballl/softball complex. What about the "Casey's Event Center" at Cedars Edge? Or, the "Altorfer Pool" at Cedars Edge? So many options could be explored. Don't give up on driving this to completion, and both providing citizens a reality of SOMETHING to do in town, and inviting new residents and ne

I just know how excited our young people were when the course was opened again. Not just the youth of the community but the schools golf teams! It's a real shame to give them a taste of what can be & then turn around & take it away! It's a real asset to the community of WB for a lot of reasons. Please help keep it open & growing.

I left West Branch over 20 years ago and some of my fondest memories revolve around that golf course. Even so far away it hurts to see what has happened since I left. I have been back, sometimes just to play golf there. That piece of land is not just something that can be farmed, it can be something for our kids to think back about.

Thank you Jerry and Tammy, for trying so hard to improve and create a wonderful facility and housing area for our community. Your efforts are truly appreciated.

Please go back in your mind to Mother's Day 2016 and envision what the course was...fast forward a week and remember when the community showed up in droves to do whatever could be done to help out...now go visit today and look at what Cedars Edge has become. Please change your stance and support the golf course and the opportunities that it provides to so many.

Honesty, Integrity....just a few of the many words that we could use to describe Jerry and Tammy Sexton. They took a leap of faith knowing a few promised nets needed to appear and put their faith in the City to do the right thing to move the entire community forward....and why wouldn't they knowing the message has been incessantly that we need to grow and be aggressive in our approach to do so to draw new families, keep the ones we have and secure the future of the town we love for generations to come. The time is now to walk the talk. We can't let this amazing opportunity for our community and particularly our youth to slide through our fingers.

We need this! Look around at ALL the surrounding small communities that have something to offer be it a pool, a golf course, a rec center, a baseball/softball complex...West Branch has NOTHING! Thanks is no where near enough to express our gratitude and appreciation to Tammy and Jerry for all of their hard work and for giving this community a great summer! It is time for the City of West Branch to step up and back something worthy!

This was such a huge positive for the community of West Branch. I just didn't realize how positive until it was snatched away.

I am not of resident of West Branch, however I do feel justified in signing this petition because I feel that it'll bring something to the community and bring other people into the community myself included.

My WL played many a match there in the 37 years I coached. WB deserves a golf course. It could be the center of MANY activities....

Due to their diligence and the upkeep of the golf course my family has played more golf together than ever. Love to see this and have enjoyed ourselves as a family.

I'm not familiar with the role the city has been asked to play but I really hope the course is preserved and risk takers are backed by local dollars if that's what it takes. I agree with the well versed analysis of JPMILLER.
