Petition for City of West Branch to reconsider Cedar's Edge Golf Course

This course would mean so much to our community. I have children who spent a majority of the summer on the course. This means they were outdoors and being active. Youth in this community need a safe place to enjoy.

The town needs a golf course. West Branch needs to join the rest of the area in having things that will draw new families to town.

My childhood was a blessing. A blessing because I was given the opportunity of growing up in a beautiful, thriving small town in Eastern Iowa. West Branch is a place to grow up and grow into for most residents. I was lucky enough to have a family that offered me and my siblings the 'gift' of being a member at Greenview Golf and Country Club. Owners Mike and Mary McCarty made you feel as you were part of something bigger than yourself...and, in fact...you probably were. Key word: were. Owners of the grounds once known - and forever known, to some - as Greenview have let it go to waste. Caring very little about the treasure it represents and the community it helps portray. It was not even a shell of itself. And then, Jerry and Tammy Sexton took a chance. They took a chance on a fledgling property. They took a chance on a community who had turned its back, on the whole, on the property. They took a chance on a the game of golf in a community that loves the game.....and, in turn, the community took a chance on them. It was a great marriage from the beginning. However, the grand wizard of the WB City Administration - Matt Muckler - and some of his merry band of people have decided that rather than maintaining the excitement they would put an insurmountable price tag on it. Much like they've done with other possible prosperous endeavors. They worry more about putting up playground equipment in a flood plain/forgotten area of town than we do with something that will actually help promote it. They worry more about possibly paving the road and parking lot at Beranek Park than paving a road to progress. It's time to take a stand. I know that City Council Member Brian Pierce is a strong proponent of Cedars Edge GCC. We thank him for his support. West Branch is the only bedroom community of Iowa City that doesn't have a swimming pool. Or a community center. Or a recreation center. A place where a large wedding party can hold a reception. I am a native of West Branch and grew up out at Greenview when the McCarty's owned and operated the course. It hasn't been the same since they sold it but then I heard Jerry and Tammy bought it. I was so excited because I KNEW they would bring it back to what it once used to be! I grew up swimming in that pool and golfing with my friends. My parents never missed Friday night couples league. When I was in high school we were a golf and football dynasty and it was something the entire town was proud of. I fail to see the City's 'logic' on this issue. Do you not want to see the town grow or to bring revenue in? Main St West Branch is busting it's proverbial butt to bring unique events to town which in turn brings people and more importantly MONEY. Shame on you for stunting these efforts. I LOVE my hometown and don't know why anyone would want to dull it's shine.

Sure would be nice if West Branch would quit buying worthless property, aka east of the creek and at the end of Scott Drive and start using the money to give people some reason to move here, kids something to do.

This is completely devistating to the West Branch and surrounding communities.

Used to be a staple of my hometown, can't believe it's come to this point of it almost being gone.

It's so sad that there is nothing for our kids to do in this town. There is so much potential with the golf course. Our town needs this.

As a mom to two kids who both love golf, this course is such a blessing to have in our small town. The improvements this past summer have been nothing short of amazing and I would love nothing more than to see the Sexton's future dreams for this place become reality. We have a serious lack of places for our teens to hang out in this town where us parents can relax and know they are safe, please reconsider your support for the golf course.

I think that this golf course is a great addition to the community and gives a source of extracurricular activity for citizens of all ages and a source of income economically for the community.

For years the golf course had been failing and Jerry and Tammy stepped up and put a lot on the line to bring it back to a community enjoyed place. They had some great things planned and a shame the city council aren't behind what the community wants.

This has been such an amazing addition to our community and with it being taken away again, it's just heartbreaking. Our community NEEDS this.
