Petition For 1984

Please remove Brian Lords from his position IMMEDIATELY. Nobody with the mindset of this despicable man has any business running a school.

I believe parents should have the right to ask for an alternative assignment if they don't want their children to read a specific book, but the district shouldn't be banning classic books that teach important lessons just because it makes someone uncomfortable.

Sensoring books, especially books as historic and significant as George Orwell's 1984, does not serve your educational mission. If parents are concerned about the content of books, either they or their children need to seek readers advisory from their librarian.

No book should be banned especially ones like 1984 of which has an important message about not allowing the government to take full control.

You have no right to ban books , just because you see fit !!! What are you afraid of?? They have the right to choose for themselves!!!

mom of 2 Endowed former students who suffered no harm reading the book at their school (not RigbyH.S.) It is important for children to learn what to look for in government to avoid being victims of evil in the future.

1984 couldn't be more relevant today! It should be required reading, and we here in the United States of America, do not "ban" things, because we don't agree, do we?

Hiding you and your kids heads in the sand like a flock of ostriches isn't going to do anything positive for them or the world. If you want to add curriculum at home, then find some, counter the viewpoints that you disagree with in 1984 and have a compare and contrast assignment that you do as a family. Be parents instead of expecting hat everything that a kid hears from their teachers aligns completely with your values. Education instead of adamant ignorance, solution finding instead of fault finding is the only way for positive progression.

First, There is a huge difference between banning a book and choosing a different book to meet learning goals. Banning a book is extreme. Second, we're talking about young adults, not children. We should not be treating them like they need protection from adult themes when we should be preparing them to think critically about them. The book should stay, but offer an alternative for the easily offended.

Educators should not be acting like part of the book's Minitrue.

Please. 1984 is a statement against socialism, one of the few nowadays. Please give the opportunity to the rest of the students to read this book. Protect free speech, and condemn censorship because of feelings and emotions.

I get it if you choose not to let your children study it, but the whole school or class banning it, especially midway, is infringing on others' rights.

No modern versions of book burning please.

Banning the book 1984 is the epitome of irony. The choice to do so only underscores the need to read it.

Wouldn't you rather your kids read this along with their class where they can have intelligent (teacher lead) conversation than reading it on their own? Very closed minded

Let the students decide what is right for them. The book has been around for years. The students should be free to read it if they want too.

Knee-jerk reactions like this are demonstrations of fear. Grow up. After reading the book, those kids will become better people than they would by being sheltered from something that might make them uncomfortable. At least you showed them a real world instance of government overreach.
