The denial of this request is completely wrong and lacks any empathy. Those who remember Dale and the many who respect his memory see the retiring of the No 1 shirt as a symbol - a symbol of the love and respect for him-such a genuine caring and talented guy who went out of his way for the fans. It is things like this that make afc r&d what it is-a well supported family club-because people care! Yes obviously there's the football but the community that surrounds it and the time, money and effort they invest in it. Maybe they didn't realise how much the retiring of the shirt meant-well hopefully they do now. Think again and change your mind. Do the right thing and show the respect that Dale deserves and the supporters of the club. RIP Dale x

An appalling decision made by men with no passion. Football is a passionate game.

stop being petty. it's a compassionate and humane tradition at R&D, and what possible harm can it cause.

Absolutely shocking that the League and FA have even thought about declining this request, absolutely heartless from both and surely common sense should be used here.

Poor decision from the League. Good luck with it, from a Colchester fan.

I think you have to take the passion of the fans and the way they feel about this honour in memory of Dale into massive consideration here, I can't see how it's going to effect a game of football with a player wearing a different number I'm sure if a player was to be cut during a game and blood was on his top you wouldn't have a issue with them wearing any number or a plain shirt providing there was no blood on the shirt.

Ludacrous and senseless decision, it simply must be overturned.
