Sides can retire numbers in other leagues around the world. I've seen gk wearing different outfield shirts after forgetting the shirt so to say wearing no.17 is a no go is ludicrous. It's been retired from a very valid reason and should remain retired as a great mark of respect.

What a stupid, hurtful, insensitive and pointless decision from the league.'s beurocratic moronic committee. Our decision was good enough for the Conference and UCL so why not them!!!

This shirt was retired under very difficult circumstances and should remain retired not only as a mark of respect to Dale but as a reminder of how tragic suicide is and how many people are effected by it

I can not see any sensible /reasonable reason why Rushden HAVE to register the number 1.
By denying their request I would suggest that the FA are bringing the game into disrepute and should be ashamed of themselves
I call upon the FA to reverse their decision and alliw Rusbden to retire the number 1 permamantly.

If West Ham can do it for Bobby Moore, Rushden should be allowed to do it for Dale

It would be a real shame for this club not to be able to carry on the tradition of honoring Mr. Roberts over some minor technicality a league invents.
