Remember all the respect fans had for Dale, would be such a shame to see somebody else wearing the no. 1 shirt.

The southern counties league has shown a true lack of respect to a phoenix trying to continue a sign of respect

Show some compassion. Personally, I think they should make a stand -- something like using up a substitute every game, in the first minute, replacing a youth keeper sub with their first choice keeper (who would be registered as #17)

It's the clubs right to retire a number if they want to. The league needs to look at its self long and hard about this and do the right thing.

The number 1 belonged to a special goalkeeper so why should it not be retired.

Please show compassion & let Rushden & Diamonds use the no 17 shirt for their starting goalkeeper.

Utterly pointless sticking to the rules. I hope the league can reconsider this shameless decision.

The rule needs to be changed under these circumstances. Dale is still to this day, the clubs most respected player. He may be gone but he shall never be forgotten.

Sounds like the league are acting like so many sports administrators tend to do. As buffoons. Hopefully the FA will put this right.

the number one jersey should be retired in memory of fake and the FA should not be able to prevent that
