To the Southern League - please be compassionate towards the wishes of Rushden & Diamonds and Dale's family, in these tragic circumstances. From a Kidderminster Harriers fan

Had to add support to this cause, the retiring of the number 1 jersey is your sign of respect to Dale Roberts, the southern league should honour it and not be punishing you for it. You have my support from a Bristol Rovers Fan

Disgusting ruling from Southern League and FA. Dale Roberts was a good keeper, tragically gone. Let's not continue to IGNORE suicide and related issues in football.

Once again, the suits at The Southern League still living in the past. No justification for not agreeing to a sensible request

No respect from the people in charge these days. Sure if it was a more well known footballer the outcome would be different. #KeepItRetired

Is this going to affect the game..... No This is supposed to be a passionate game, can we not show some compassion?

I'm sure if it was Man United / Chelsea or even the all powerful Sky TV asking the FA, there would be no objection. Once again some-one of little importance, incapable of applying compassion or common sense to a club that simply wants to honour one of it's own who was taken far too early. Mike, Middlesbrough fan.

Sadly, our country is still full of 'jobsworths' who can't see beyond their little books of rules. Show some compassion and common sense, SLB. Jeff Teasdale, Macclesfield

Here at Macclesfield we retired the Number 21 shirt in memory of Richard Butcher, who tragically passed away whilst a player at Macc. I seem to recall in my youth keepers playing without numbers at league level, so if these bunch of jobsworths wont allow R and D's keeper to wear 17 perhaps keepers should wear no number.

Just can't believe the lack of compassion and complete jobsworth attitude of these people.
