As trivial as it sounds, one of the things I really like about Miami when I toured was the flexibility of the meal plan (as a declining balance). I was even told the reason it was here was because students pushed for it! Now they want to convert our mean system to that of OU or OSU! I am totally against this!

My child will now be forced to go without breakfast and the university will profit from this. Being a miami athlete her practice block is early. There is no time for her to go to the cafeteria for breakfast as many of them do not open until 7:30 a.m. The way we got around this was to purchase her food from the market through her meal plan to keep in her room. Now she will need to purchase her food on her own and give up her meal plan for breakfast. The only cafeteria that is open 24 hours is Armstrong, which is impossible to get in the morning and then go to the field. So five days a week she will only use the meals once a day or I'm forced to pay for the higher plan with the higher priced food. I would not be so against this if the staff in the cafeteria didn't ttreat our kids like criminals. My daughter made the mistake of leaving the cafeteria once worth a banana and the staff grabbed her ripped the banana out of her hand through it in the garbage and told her that she was not allowed to leave with it. Seriously she had paid for it, why couldn't she leave with it?

Why put in so many a-la-carte locations and then essentially force people to mostly eat at buffet locations?

When I came here as a freshman my family was told that any remaining MuLaa could not be refunded (it could). Miami recently changed a policy so that a student’s meal plan balance upon graduation could not convert to MuLaa. With this new meal plan students will lose the ability for swipes to rollover at all.
Each new policy Miami has taken has made it harder for students to get the full value they load on to their student IDs and easier for the school to keep unused money. This is done through barriers and tiers. With the proposed new meal plan the Miami ID will have:
1) Buffet swipes (do not rollover semester to semester)
2) Declining balance (cannot convert to MuLaa)
3) MuLaa (nonrefundable)
4) MU Bucks (essentially unused by students w/ marginal benefits)
So why are we using proprietary currencies at all? And how does creating more benefit students in any way? It makes sense from a business standpoint for the university but it is not in students' best interests.

This meal plan would be detrimental not only to the students paying for their food, but for the student workers and employees at the dining courts. So glad someone stepped up to make a difference.

As someone who's worked as a student ambassador for two years now, the anxiety parents and prospective students have about potential hidden costs of attending Miami is a major concern of mine. I believe this meal plan is not in the best interest for prospective students who are already taking on great financial burden simply to go to Miami. Miami should be a place for students to receive an education, and, accordingly should seek to put student interests first.

I hate the idea of buffets for kids. It just encourages them to load up to get their money's worth and causing over eating. My son will be a junior but still plans on having a meal plan so he can eat between classes, but not sure we will sign up for it now if this is how it is. Please reconsider this crazy option!

Revising the meal plan structure is a good idea but I do not believe this plan is the best solution

I think that the declining balance is way too large and enough for a whole year worth of food. Making students who just want the declining balance choose to pay $3,000 is outrageous. Also, I think that the buffet swipes should be allowed to be used at la carte dinning options, if what you are buying is less than a buffet swipe is. I think that this system needs to be reevaluated and has to take into account what the students want because we are the ones paying for the food.
