Assemblymember Jim Cooper has just introduced Assembly Bill 165 which would remove protections against searches of electronic devices for K-12 students. This bill is a threat to the privacy and free speech rights of students in the state of California.
Please sign this petition to protect CalECPA for students and send a strong message to our legislature that California youth are OPPOSED to AB 165.
AB 165 would:
• Would allow school officials to search cell phones and other devices without a warrant, without consent or notice to students or parents
• Remove all protections for student digital privacy rights under the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA)
Many of us rely on digital devices to communicate about social and political actions, about immigration, religion, and sensitive personal and family issues. Now more than ever, we need to make sure that California is doing everything it can to protect students of all backgrounds – not passing laws that make us more vulnerable to searches and harassment.

The current volume of support has secured us a formal meeting with the office of Assemblymember Cooper next week. We are finalizing our legal briefing document to present the specific constitutional risks posed by AB 165 during this discussion.

Teachers and students deserve privacy rights the same as any other group of workers and individuals
This bill is not in the best interest of students or citizens in a nation with first and fourth amendment rights.

This is an infringement of my right to privacy. While it may seem like a good idea now, there is no telling when it could be used for something that serves a more sinister or petty motive.
