PE credit for Marching Band

When I think back to marching band at Sobrato, I remember it being vigorous and physically demanding. Marching is as physically demanding as running a mile. Playing an instrument in motion requires as much focus to breath as swimming, a similar cardio activity because breath is limited. However, I also remember my schedule not having enough room for me to take PE unless it was at the expense of another AP class. Schedules are not designed to accommodate both PE and marching band within the same year, with the exception of freshman year. This needs to change. The music programs in Morgan Hill need tour support. They need you to instill a sense of pride outside of the prode the students are able to instill within themselves. They need you to believe in their athletic ability and to promote this lifelong commitment to healthy living.

To me this is a no-brainer. Marching band students work HARD (mentally, physically, creatively and cooperatively).

What a shame this would be. Music is so important in our life's. These good teachers deserve to keep their jobs.

Former marching band member here. I remember the football players joking with us -- until they tried to keep up with just a high mark-time drill. They couldn't cut it after 5 minutes, and we had already been doing the drill for 20 minutes before they started.

Marching band is more strenuous than most PE classes.

This was something I wished for back when I was in the LOER in the late 90s and early 2000s.

My daughter was in color guard 1995-1998. These members along with the band spent more time doing physical activity daily, including weekends, than an average day in PE. Plus if they participated in Winterguard, that extended into the next semester. This is LONG overdue.

I feel like marching band AND other sports being played like football or soccer should be taken into consideration also.

Many schools include band, Sports, and even theater if it's a musical production in their PE course fulfillment. I earnestly request that marching band is allowed as a PE course option in order to allow our musicians the ability to participate in their musical passion. If you have participated in marching band, you know that you exert as much physical activity and quite honestly more than participating in a PE class. Marching band encompasses hours and hours of summer practices, competitions over weekends, after-school practices, and it is very physical. The practices are frequently many hours long where students are developing increased lung capacity by playing their instruments, increased coordination and the students are physically walking/marching for hours. The activity exceeds requirements for a standard PE class.

I marched for 4 years at Live Oak and can attest that all of the hours of practice endured during that time deserve to be counted as PE credits.
