A hero in the true sense of the word. A special Ballyhaunis man whom we never should forget.To name a ship after him would also I believe honour all Irish people over time who made unselfish sacrifices to improve and give the rest of us freedom to live our lives in peace. My Uncle,Ciaran Newman ( USN retired ) from Dublin also served in Vietnam in 65 with the brown water navy.

Lance Corporal Patrick "Bob" Gallagher was a proud Irish emigrant to the USA, who joined the the equally proud US Marine Corps
Patrick "Bob" Gallagher was awarded the Navy Cross for bravery and he represents the courage of being one of 3,000 Irish men & women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in Vietnam, and was one of 29 Irish to have been killed in action there.
I wish to petition for this brave Irishman who fought for his adopted country and for his name to be put forward in keeping with the tradition of naming Navy Ships after, U.S. Marine Corp heroes and especially as this would coincide with the 50th anniversary of Patrick's death in action.
With this in mind I request all representatives support in raising this request at every opportunity with the Secretary of the Navy.
