Parents Against Police Brutality Against University of California Students Letter to Governor Jerry Brown

November 21, 2011 The Honorable Jerry Brown Governor State of California State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Police Brutality against UC Student Protestors Dear Governor Brown: Parents Against Police Brutality on University of California Students is a collective of parents of UC students, students, alumni and other concerned citizens appalled by the brutal acts against peacefully protesting students on the campuses of UC Berkeley on November 9, 2011 and UC Davis on November 18, 2011 and the tepid responses from Chancellors, Regents and your administration to those brutal acts. The incidents on the UC Berkeley campus on November 9, and the lack of appropriate response from you and the rest of the above mentioned parties, set a dangerous precedent and directly led to the inappropriate and brutal action taken by police against students on the campus of UC Davis on November 18. Had the first incident been decisively condemned, with appropriate action taken against the police and the administrators who authorized those actions, with fair and decent policy and protocol established for administrators to follow during non-violent protest, and civil disobedience, the second incident could have been prevented. If not for the shameful video of both incidents going viral, we have little confidence that either would have received any attention from Chancellors, Regents or your administration. The University of California is an educational system that is esteemed around the world, where students are expected to shine above the rest. Due to the incidents of this month, the UC system will be seen as no better than any police state around the world, condemned for brutalizing its citizen protestors. Parents who send their children to the University of California campuses expect that they will receive the best possible education, and will become a part of a culture that will usher progress into the rest of the world through innovation and example. It is not expected that the administrators of those institutions will justify brutality against them and dismiss their Constitutional rights. Parents Against Police Brutality on University of California Students strongly urges you to take a decisive and public stand condemning the action of the police in these incidents, immediately review the actions of the Regents and more specifically, the Chancellors of the campuses where these incidents took place, and hold them responsible for their complicity in these events, and demand immediate, appropriate and decent protocol to be established to prevent this from happening again. Sincerely, Parents Against Police Brutality on University of California Students Signed: CC: Senator Lois Wolk Senator Loni Hancock Assemblymember Mariko Yamada Assemblymember Nancy Skinner Robert J. Birgeneau, Chancellor, UC Berkeley Linda P.B. Katehi, Chancellor, UC Davis Mark J. Yudof, President, UC Regents
