November 13, 2011 English Department Undergraduate Student Letter We, the undersigned UC Berkeley English undergraduates, formally condemn the actions taken by the UC Berkeley administration and the UCPD in response to the peaceful protests that occurred on campus on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. We commend the decisions of Professor Celeste Langan, Professor Robert Hass, Professor Geoffrey O’Brien, and all the other English department faculty members, as well as graduate students, to exercise their right to free speech. We also vehemently oppose the decision by UCPD to physically harm and arrest peaceful protesters, as was the case with Professor Langan. In order to show our support for the courageous actions taken by the department’s faculty members and graduate students, we, hereby, consent to both of these group’s instructors to conduct any and/or all of the following on this upcoming day of action, Tuesday, November 15, 2011: 1. Cancel classes in order to attend and support Tuesday’s day of action. 2. Have a teach-out to discuss important issues that our campus and community are currently facing. 3. Have class off campus. 4. Postponing or cancelling any coursework that is affected by the cancelling of classes. We do not limit our consent to the above-mentioned conditions or to their one-time implementation on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. We are in full support of any actions that the English Department’s faculty members and graduate students are willing to take on Tuesday, and any other date throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. Signed, Oscar Lagresa, President, English Undergraduate Association Jonathan Almerido, Vice-President, English Undergraduate Association Hannah Langley, Social Activities Coordinator, English Undergraduate Association Lauren Mueller, Media Relations Manager, English Undergraduate Association

I started this because I felt alone in my concern but the response has shown me that our entire department is feeling the same weight. It is truly humbling to see so many of you speaking up for the faculty who give so much of their time to us.

Completely unacceptable how the police treated our professors. They were just standing there. Glad the department is taking a stand.

This is ridiculous. Watching them get dragged away was sickening. Support to all the GSIs too.

Langan is an incredible teacher. Its shameful she got arrested for speaking her mind. Berkeley needs to do better.

YES. Cancel the classes. We have way bigger things to talk about right now than sticking to the syllabus while our teachers are getting hauled off.

The way they handled the protest was brutal. Im behind our faculty 100% on this.
