We understand the long tradition of hosting multiple regattas at Westerville Crew, however believe that for a club our size hosting three separate regattas a year has become untenable for the coaches, parents, and rowers. The top priority for any club during a competitive Juniors Spring season should be participating in competitive, varied regattas and focusing time and energy into training.
The coaches have emphatically expressed they do not want to be responsible for taking time away from spring training, or risk of athlete injury, right before Midwest Regionals to host this (3rd in a year) regatta.
We must prevent injuries that could remove athletes from a practice, lineups or future regattas. And even worse, if our adults are getting hurt and requiring surgery while moving docks, we do not wish for our athletes to miss out from competition that could get them an advantage collegiately.
As parents, we are asking the board to honor the race schedule initially agreed to in August of Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Dogwood, and Midwest Regionals. We will not have the parental volunteer support to manage a Hoover Spring Regatta.

I will send a letter to the board. We are strongly opposed to a regatta in spring. If held, we will not be volunteering and our rower will not risk injury or achedemic stress to assist in a regatta that consistently costs the club more than it makes.

If the following pieces change your mind toward the positive please let me know. This is simply to paint a more complete picture: 1. We agree the event should not be held identical to how it was last year 2. By partnering with OSU, we have a chance to raise our profile at a time when Rowing will see a surge of participation post-Boys in a Boat 3. On financials - regardless of participation, the cost of the event will be halved because of the partnership with OSU, bringing us to profitability. The participation surge and addition of sponsors will only compound 4. Mind the costs of away regattas: both to the club in the form of entry fees, fuel, and coaching hotel rooms; and to families for their own room and board 5. This is not meant to replace Dogwood 6. Compared to last year, the burden on each individual family should be halved or less because A. We are sharing tasks with OSU (which actually needs and is judged on volunteer hours) B. the date would not interfere with their other events as it did last year C. we can reduce to share a day or shift toward watching our kids on Saturday and volunteering together on Sunday. D. The amazing surge from U14 families will continue into next season E. The participation surge we expect. 7. The workload is much closer to Fall than it is to Dillon 8. It's our best option as the only U14 programming for the season 9. It comes after a long winter gap when all but Senior families are most rested 10. It's the best and closest chance the local community will get to see a live race post-Boys in the Boat Also--as the party injured in the opening statement--I can assure you that we don't lift docks onto trailers for events on the Hoover. My desires to protect the club from extreme burnout and injury have been communicated broadly to both parents and fellow board members. Club growth and retention are paramount.
