Bill Ollis had a hearing before the State of Louisiana Pardon Board on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, and the Pardon Board it was their unanimous recommendation that Bill be considered for immediate parole. Bill is 63 years old and has served more than 34 years in Angola State Prison after being wrongfully convicted for a crime he did not commit in 1981. Admittedly, Bill was involved in a homicide in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana at that time but his involvement was minimal and he did not deserve to be charged with second degree murder. Bill had 2 co-defendants who made a sweetheart deal with the district attorney. In return for turning on Bill as the major culprit they were offered minimal sentences, when in fact, those 2 co-defendants were the real perpetrators. Bill was sentenced to life imprisonment in Angola. After several years in prison Bill's attorney (who is now a sitting federal judge) looked into the disposition of the 2 co-defendants, who should have still been in prison for their part in the crime, but, to her horror, she discovered that the men had never been incarcerated at all! For some reason they had never been picked up or delivered by the authorities of St. Tammany Parish to begin serving their sentences. The sheriff at the time said in a newspaper interview that it was the responsibility of the offenders to turn themselves in. Of course, they never did so and they have both continued to live their lives totally unpunished. Bill is a devout man of God. He is a very humble, gentle and meek man, as well as a model prisoner. Bill truly deserves to be released from Angola. He has a large and loving extended family and community who are anxious to welcome him home. The Pardon Board evaluated Bill prior to his hearing and determined that his chances for ever committing another crime to be less than zero. We ask your support for this petition to free Bill. The recommendation still has to be signed by Governor Jindal before his release is a reality and that is the reason for this petition. Louisiana's sentencing laws are harsh in the extreme and for the Pardon Board to make this recommendation is a monumental and rare event.
