Memorial Stadium is a war memorial. It was built for the purpose of honoring those Illini who sacrificed their lives in World War I. The Illinois Board of Trustees, by defacing the name, are ignoring the purpose for which it was built.

There is mounting evidence that the trustees and those who support them are in jeopardy of violating federal and state statutes. It is illegal to deface a war memorial on public property, whether federal or state. (18 U.S.C. § 1369) Both the trustees and their supporters cannot escape the consequences of such flagrant self-dealing.

Our most recent comment is from Karen Paul.

"Memorial Stadium is a sacred memorial in memory of the alumni killed serving our country. Shame On You for even thinking about altering the name at all, which therefore alters the Whole Meaning of what the stadium stands for, i feel. Out of everything that makes up the U of I, you have Nothing Else you can put the Gies name on for their contribution?!?!?!"
