Opposition to Closing Garland Street Project Proposed By BJK Industries
We, the undersigned, being residents of Louisville Metro, oppose the proposal by BJK Industries to close off a portion of Garland Street to traffic. The intent to close the street within a radius of any Title V facility, (Clariant Chemical Plant-1227 South Street) handles materials that are explosive hazards this will:
1) limit the community needs to have access to every route possible to evacuate safely
2) pose inconvenience for residents, workers and visitors travelling by auto, bus, bicycle, wheelchair or foot in the vicinity
3) prevent the most direct access for emergency vehicles (police, fire and EMS)
4) be contrary to the existing neighborhood plan and the neighborhood’s intent to limit or reverse street closures.

I just spent the morning looking at a map of those evacuation routes again and it honestly makes me feel sick thinking about how they could even suggest cutting off Garland Street right near the plant. People keep messaging me about their own worries regarding emergency access and honestly the silence from BJK Industries is just deafening while we sit here wondering if they even care about the neighborhood at all.

I was looking at the screen and just realized how much momentum we actually have now and it feels kind of surreal honestly. It just goes to show how much this neighborhood cares about keeping our routes open and safe because people really stepped up when it mattered most.

I support the no closing of any street. I'm 80 years old. I ride in a motor chair. I can't be going two and three blocks because some want to close the street for more money in their pocket. I have to be safe out here in these streets, because I am old. Now you want to stop my pathway to get to one place to another. This is so wrong. No, No to closing the street or any street.
Our streets and roads belong to the public. They were built to optimize, rather than hinder conveyance from one point to another. Closing ANY thoroughfare presents barriers to pedestrians, cyclists, those riding the bus and motorists. It is unthinkable, that an industrial site, especially one producing dangerous chemicals, would suggest blocking off any street, for its own use or convenience. If allowed, this would represent, yet another example of public property being gifted to a private entity at great expense to our community.
This seems to be a dangerous proposal that would put the neighborhood at risk.
Stop industry and corporations from destroying the California neighborhood.
Let’s keep our Louisville Neighborhoods residential. After the rail road disaster in Ohio, move chemical plants out of residential neighborhoods.
Closing streets is an abomination in urban areas and especially rural b areas already impacted by inappropriate industries such as this one. Two way streets! Complete streets! Less talk more action!

Taking away streets for private industry deprives neighborhoods of connectivity.
