On March 12, 2013, the City of Bluefield, WV, decided to begin to draft and possibly enact an ordinance that would ban all "pit bull type" dogs within the city limits. The problem with this ban is that irresponsible pet owners are not being held responsible for abuse, neglect, and maltreatment of their dogs. Responsible dog owners are also in danger of having their family pet taken away. Those acquiring "pit bull type" dogs, who are using them for other purposes rather than a family pet and not properly taking care of their dog, will just acquire a different breed of dog such as a Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, American Bulldog, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherds, and other large breed dogs. "Pit bull type" also lumps over twenty different breeds of dogs into one category and bases the discrimination on what the dog looks like. Also, BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is very costly and the cons of BSL outweigh the pros. We all have a variety of reasons for opposing the ban, whether it is to put the city's money elsewhere for good use or because we love animals, but we join together here to say the we oppose the "Pit bull type" dog ban in the city of Bluefield, WV.
