We, the undersigned, petition Parliament to abandon its plans to keep relevant evidence secret from claimants in civil cases against the government.

The measures, dressed up as a protection of justice, are in fact a direct threat to British justice and the rule of law. They will allow the government to keep the details of activities such as torture and detention without trial secret from the public.

As it stands, when an individual tries to sue the government for such actions, any relevant documents that may help the claimant to prove their case can be legally demanded - often embarrassing the government as their wrongdoings go public.

Should the bill become law, such documents will be kept secret from the victim and from the public - hindering the right to a fair hearing and serving no purpose other than to save the government from humiliation.

Claimants will also by default lose the right to challenge the legitimacy of secret evidence presented against them.
