I did my Year Abroad at Nottingham Uni, thanks to the language department! That was 8 years ago, and to this day, I still remember it as the best year of my life!
By reducing the number of staff in this Faculty, you're not only depriving foreign students from the chance to study in such a great University in an amazing country, you are also depriving your own students from discovering another part of the world and another culture.
On top of that, the quality of teaching will dwindle as student/teacher ratio increases. Good quality teaching, especially with languages, is done in a class of 8-12 people. Otherwise it becomes difficult to express yourself and practice your language skills. Imagine a class of 20 all talking at the same time!
In a nutshell, ridiculous decision. Education should not always be about saving money...

I hope the powers that be are listening to the considered views of those who are directly affected by the proposed cuts and those who have personal knowledge of the benefits that high quality language teaching can bring. This has all the hallmarks of a misinformed management that has lost its way and has forgotten what students can reasonably expect for their not insignificant course fees / loans - great teaching, support and mentoring, rather than "look what we built" sports centres and the like.

As a foreign national I will never underestimate the importance of high-quality language teaching. This generation of graduates need to be equipped for global economy and exchange. Don't reduce their hopes for a bright future with these dramatic cuts!

The impact this will have to the students and remaining staff will be severe and seriously jeopardizes the quality of teaching and the welfare of both parties. I urge you to reconsider

As a German graduate of Nottingham, I deplore this action. Languages should be an important part of this generally great university. This is also an outrageous way to treat any loyal staff

As a graduate from this University, and now a languages teacher myself, I am horrified by this. Young people with foreign language skills are needed in the UK now more than ever. This department has some highly specialised language areas - University of Nottingham this approach is unworthy of you.

I'm a former PhD student and teacher in the school of modern languages at Nottingham. I know first hand what an excellent research school it is and how stretched the teaching is already to provide students with top quality language education. Cutting staff is not only cruel but short-sighted, as it will further reduce the opportunities for education that helps to open minds
outwards into other countries and cultures just when we need this the most. This seems like a top-down, managerial decision that is undemocratic and just wrong

the university thinking about money it will be saving and not a care in the world as to how the students' teaching will be affected and the lives of those who you will redistribute to new jobs throughout the university or sack. It's not right. If I knew something like this was going to happen, I definitely would have come to the uni and have boycotted such disgraceful behviour. It's appauling and I feel so much for the staff whose lives you are ripping apart.
