No to HB 1591

We would like to keep our homeschooling separate from the government. Thankfully, right now Indiana is one of the best and easiest states in which to home educate. We personally know of families who have moved to Indiana just because of our freedom to homeschool without government regulation. Our children, two of whom were recently adopted out of foster care, have attended public, charter, and home schools. We have seen the amazing benefits of a personalized, private education in a warm, loving environment. Please consider offering us a tax break instead of offering us money. We would not want our family to be placed in the same predicament our state was a few years ago when the federal government attached Common Core contingencies to federal education funds. Nor would we want to have our curriculum choices limited as we have seen happen in private schools, one we have seen first hand in Seymour, IN, who are accepting education vouchers from the state. I do not want Indiana Standards pushed in to my home by this bill. I homeschool one child and send another to a private school that now accepts vouchers and in turn has to use Indiana Standards. I will say without a doubt, my homeschooler is smarter. As a result, I am pulling my child in private school next year as a result. I look at what he brings home and I think, I can do better than this. Much better. Keep your $1000 credit. I will educate based on how my children learn best and can produce better results than the state can.

Please increase tax deductions instead of creating more government oversite. We can educate our children better than an administrator with whom we have no relationship!

The choice our family has made to homeschool is one that has been made to ensure that our children receive the best education in an environment that balances their preparation for the real world, a faithfulness to our family's world-view, and what we believe to be the best interests of our children. With the many attacks on freedom of conscience already imposed on the people of our country, the last thing that I, as a homeschooling father want, is further intrusion into the formation of our children. I do not want data collected on my children that I have not authorized, data which could serve to stigmatize them even if they are brilliant scholars. I do not want the state setting the details of the educational program we select for our children - yes, a program needs to be well rounded and include both life skills and a broad array of educational topics, but I have no desire to have point-by-point requirements imposed. It is my strong request that HB 1591 be dropped or completely reworked. Thank you

Leave homeschoolers alone

I don't want my tax money for the schooling I do with my children at home. The government needs all of my tax money and more. I taught public school and saw how federal education mandates undermined good education. Local control is best - and parents are best at teaching their children. The homeschool category should not include kids that the public schools have kicked for disciplinary reasons. These should not be included under the name of homeschooling. Most homeschool families do a great job and there are a bigger percentage of children who the government school systems fail at teaching than those that fail in the homeschool environment. Please know your facts before lumping all homeschool families into a category that the school systems created. I have learned more teaching my children in the primary grades then I learned throughout high school and much of college. I have several graduate degrees, also. My children will have a greater foundation than I ever received. We need more of that kind of educated person to help get our government out of debt. What job has the government done well? Mail? Taxes? Spending? Let's look at who should be teaching who. It should not be the government teaching unless it improves its track record. Then maybe we can talk about it.

I would rather pay solely for our homeschool materials and maintain my freedoms to choose than receive assistance. The monetary responsibility is something we knowingly and joyfully take on in the choice to educate our children at home.

My child is thriving and far exceeds his peers in SAT-10 testing. Allow me as his parent to freely continue to do my job with no government involvement. Public education is a mess and became so once government stepped into the process in the 1950's. Just check the literacy rate since then.

I do not believe the government should involve themselves in regulating home schools in Indiana. I don't want the governments money to educate my children, I just want the freedom that I have enjoyed thus far to continue.

My family love the freedom we have homeschooling here in Indiana. I would hate to see the system that failed them in public schools be forced into our home.

how about spending your time and energy requiring cursive writing in all school districts? home school children learn it! So controlling home schooling is more important than reading and writing cursive?How about getting your priorities right ?

We already have an option for government funded and regulated education (public school). I am exercising my right to opt out of that system and educate my own children. I do not want that freedom compromised!
