Please show support to leave the current code as is. Allow responsible dog owners to have their dogs on the beach without a leash during the current approved times. Do not change the current laws.

There is a proposal to only allow leashed dogs on Virginia Beach Beaches. Siting recent attacks although only 1% of the cities dog incidents have been on the beach.

Updates

March 21, 2019

The feedback regarding the proposed leash mandate continues to highlight the importance of maintaining our current coastal access. I am currently compiling your experiences to present to the city council as they evaluate these changes.

March 21, 2019

The momentum behind this petition highlights a collective desire to protect the current access we enjoy on our local beaches. It is clear that many residents value the status quo and expect common sense to prevail throughout this legislative discussion.

There are not many places where dogs are allowed to run free so they can enjoy the sights, smells and water without a leash. Many pet owners are very responsible and know their dogs well enough that terrible situations can be avoided. Most people who allow their dogs off leash also are responsible enough to have trained their dogs obedience that also decreases the chance that bad things are going to happen off leash. I am in total support to allow off leash dogs when owners are responsible enough to recognize when their dog has a temperment that can be allowed off leash in public places.

There are those who are irresponsible with whatever the privilege. The vast majority of the time, taking that privilege away from all, including the responsible, is not the answer. The joy the dogs get overflows to the owners when we see how happy they are, physically active, stay healthy and enjoying our beautiful beaches. Irresponsible owners should be reported. Consider “patrolling” areas where there have been reports but blindly making a new law seems rash. There must be other options to consider.

My dogs are well behaved and deserve to have off leash privileges during the designated time slots. Do not punish the whole for the few who abuse the leash laws!

Our dogs love to be able to run along the beach and play in the water. Why should a few irresponsible pet owners get to ruin it for all the responsible pet owners? Keep the law as it is please!
