NVIDIA needs support OpenCL because is is open standard such as OpenGL for graphics programming. It is not a threat for CUDA but natural enlargement of existed development environment.

CUDA is dead, OpenCL won/. NVidia, you're throwing money down the tubes in not also supporting OpenCL 1.2/2.0. From all this lost revenue, just fire yourselves. Your competitors are blowing you away.

OpenCL is updated to 2.0 version. It does almost all the things as CUDA. Extend the support. :)

As many fields would take advantage of GPGPU, it is unbelievable that, for commercial reasons, one major company push is own proprietary solution over an open standard. Everything is said, I guess.

I have worked with OpenCL on CUDA architecture for 3 years and it's clear that they no longer want to give high quality support for OpenCL. Through the years they've removed the OpenCL guides for the CUDA architecture from the website and now we can't even run the oclDeviceQuery due to missing libraries. I'm getting back on my research with OpenCL but, unfortunately, NVIDIA is forcing me to try AMD's architecture out. All I want from NVIDIA is respect to their customers.

Being a relatively avid cruncher for Folding@home for a number of years. Nvidia is missing out on a decent market not including higher level OpenCL support. F@H's GPU cores are built around OpenCL. Since a sizable number of people who run F@H also run folding "farms" they tend to go the AMD route since AMD outperforms Nvidia by a LARGE margin.
I'm honestly starting to think of stepping away from Nvidia for this reason alone.
You'd think that if they enhance their support for OpenCL in their drivers, along with having CUDA, the combined effort would give Nvidia a boost over ATI which use only OpenCL.

Dear Nvidia, Please provide top-tier support for OpenCL. You already make quality, stable hardware with reliable drivers on Linux. To hold on to this position of strength by slowly back-pedaling from OpenCL shows insecurity instead of confidence. It also signals a focus of Nvidia's GPGPU for only HPC and not mobile.

For me as a computational scientist who is funded by the public it is only fair to return the results of my research to the public in the form of free open source code. Consequently, I can only rely on open standards such as OpenCL. Good hardware does not need a software-based vendor-lock.
