Open letter to ChildLine: Stop normalising the use of pornography to children

We need to let children be children and their minds should be filled with wholesome things. I believe porn is destructive force and should not be seen as normal

As a former teacher and a committed Christian I whole heartedly support this petition.

Porn twists people's brains and makes everyone a body to be plundered and enjoyed at my whim. This is dehumanising. Not God's way at all.

This video, being promoted under the head of Childline, is entirely unhelpful to young people who might want to know whether porn is helpful to finding the real joy of sex.  Porn is presented as fun, harmless and definitely something to be engaged in. The ‘side comments’ by the presenter suggest that actually his comments are not serious.    Actually he is presenting ideas on what can be engaged in – and then advises people not to engage in it, having opened up the possibility that they can and actually it is fun – but you shouldn’t do it.  It is the most likely way to entice young people to experiment. Once caught in the net of experimentation it is really difficult to become disengaged.  This video will whet the appetite, and encourage engagement with the different forms e.g. end of section 2 – sex.  It is as if the presenter’s words are encouraging abstinence but actually, he is laughing at himself – he and I both know his words are not to be taken seriously.  Go ahead and get engaged with porn. At one point he says “if you’re worried about the law surrounding this, I’ll include some links in the description below “– these are entirely illegible. This is encouragement to engage in porn.  The advice given is to moderate how much you watch – the advice should be nil, not “how much”.  “As long as you approach porn with an understanding of what it is you are looking at, and avoid anything which is illegal, you’ll be fine.  Have fun”.  This is an invitation to young people to dip a toe into the water, without mentioning that the pull of the current is increasingly strong and you will be engaging with something you cannot control.  Signed Margaret Simons, parent, former youth worker, and 10 years the Chair of a centre supporting women out of situations of domestic violence.

I strongly believe that we should keep our children's innocence as long as possible let them be children,

When a child and young person watches porn six times or more they develop a compulsion. This then leads on to developing unreal expectations of sex, of their bodies, of resilience to dark fantasies. It is so damaging to their development. Why would you even consider normalising it?

ChildLine charity is trying to be cool at the expense of the children they claim to protect. Sounds like the fox is in charge of the hen house. I'd check the background of whoever sanctioned this.

I CANNOT believe there has to be a petition for this. I’m beyond outraged at what is going on. I have no adequate words.

This sounds awful. We must protect our children and teenagers.

Please protect our young people, without compromise!

It is beyond belief that organisation affiliated with the NSPCC thinks this video is acceptable. Please remove it.

Pornography should not be considered norm for any one let alone children. We cannot expect people to respect one another if we see each other as nothing more than objects. Society has already become too sexualized we don't need our children to be influenced any more

I'm appalled at the content of this.

Sexualising children and robbing them of their innocence is unforgivable, destructive and social suicide.

I believe that this video WTF is Porn is unsuitable for children and damaging to their minds. This video should be taken down. Porn is harmful to children.

God save us from these so-called "child experts" who obviously no nothing about children.
