As a former Catholic School Board trustee, I am distressed by the actions of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. We live in a country where dissent is tolerated. I applaud the actions of the creators of this petition and encourage all teachers, and parents to sign it.

This action by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is nothing less than a blatant assault against free speech and the Canadian Charter of Rights. Even more, it feeds into what has become a neo-McCarthyiest campaign of the pro-Israeli oppression - and dispossession, and, indeed, murder - of the Palestinian people.

Canada still has free speech for its citizens. ESL teacher Nadia Shoufani is a Canadian citizen and her free speech about the horrors of Israeli occupation of Palestine are one of a terrorist but of a caring teacher in support of the Palestinian people.
